Saw this on r/squaredcircle, which makes it fourth hand information of Meltzer's sometimes shoddy NJPW reporting, but

I mean...yeah, it seemed pretty substantial from what I remember.
Not everyone can be Daniel Bryan and even he's on constant egg shells.

According to wikipedia (yea, I know...), it was his repeated headbutts that caused the subdural hematoma.
I gotta ask, can working headbutts cause that, or was he just laying into dudes full force with his head?

Not just the headbutts, he’s gotten knee’d, kicked, punched in his head etc but those headbutts played a big factor for sure The thud on those headbutts were sick.

And it seems like people wanted him to do it to them (I seem to remember Cody saying that he'd really wanted to take a Shibata headbutt if he got the chance to) as hard as possible to show that they could take it.

Okada is frankly lucky that last one didn't do him in too along with Shibata. Disgusting. My re-intro to NJPW was Wrestle Kingdom 9 with Shibata vs Ishii. It blew me away at how stiff it seemed, it never really occurred to me just how hard they were actually doing those strikes. Like they must just be really good at working the strikes, right? Nope, at least not those headbutts.

I frequently go back to watch Okada's early 2017 matches, and I can't watch this spot with the sound on. I turn it off after Shibata eats the rainmaker. It's really sad that Shibata will never wrestle again, and I hope the young lions take observation of where the line needs to be drawn. Not worth it one bit.

He no doubt was about to break into the main event scene and as without question he was over enough and had all the ability to be IWGP champ. At the very least he would have had a nice IC title run If he could change that up, i'm sure he would have lightened up

He had concluded his time with the NEVER Championship and arc with Goto at WK 11, had been elevated to the main event at the New Japan Cup, etc. It would have saved Dominion from looking so similar to WK 11, and he also would've been really well suited for the storyline of saving the IWGP IC title.

That actually would have been better Would have established Shibata without question and given him a series with Naito to look forward to. Tana really struggled with injuries during that time so having Shibata as champ would have def been nice

Heartbreaking, but not unexpected if it's true.
And yeah, the headbutts...never liked them. I think the first one I distinctly remember him delivering was that one against Nakajima in the NJPW vs. NOAH match, and I just squirmed at the sight and sound. Shibata worked against Ishii and Goto a lot and both guys have fantastic worked headbutt spots, but he went out there and did the real thing, and just as Tanahashi had predicted years ago it cost him his career.
Doesn't take away the sting of one of your favorites never coming back, but I'm glad to see him thriving with the dojo guys and in good health now, given how badly it all could have ended.

Tanahashi kept telling him to knock that shit off. Shame he didn't listen.

I know it's not really on par with Jinder Mahal's bacne or that face that people keep posting, but could we put that headbutt gif under a spoiler tag please? It's still incredibly uncomfortable to watch.
A small part of me who adored Shibata is in mourning over this, yes, but it's for the best. What was it he said, there was only a 7% survival rate for what he went through? He's not meant to be back in the ring.
