Can we talk about how the film makes zero effort to mask the fact it was shot in Germany?

Grandpa Joe was the only grandparent with lines....because the others had little knowledge of English.

So yeah I watched it last night and I was suprised by how much dialog was off screen. Also there a few times where Willy Wonka has a line off screen and it sounds very little like Gene Wilder.

Grandpa Joe was the only grandparent with lines....because the others had little knowledge of English. Also Augustus Gloop. They interviewed him years later, when his English had improved, and he revealed that he went through hundreds of takes for his interview scene because he couldn't pronounce "fudge".

why was Mike Teavee meant to be a bad kid? What's wrong with watching TV all day and dressing like a cowboy? I would do that all day if I could

I would do that all day if I could Probably the only thing I liked about the Depp remake was the updating of Mike Teavee (and Violet). He's not DUMB from all his TV and video games... he's very smart. But he completely lacks imagination. And rather than actually building a character around Roald Dahl's baffling and idiosyncratic pet peeve about kids chewing gum, making Violet a stage kid with a stage mom worked, too. That was literally all that worked. One thing that always confused me about the original movie, the weirdly batshit tone before they ever get to the factory. They don't go "Oh, we're in the real world and things get crazy when we get inside," there's sassy computers right from the start. Too bad five hours of that part are taken up by the song Charlie's mom sings.

He didn't really have an imagination as he just stared at the lookity box...

Did the oompa Loompas get paid? Did they live inside the factory? Did they have a union? Were health benefits provided? Did Wonka offer profit sharing? Did they own the rights to their songs? Were they required to work holidays?
Kind of wish Andy Rooney was still alive. He would probably know the answers.

I recently watched the Johnny Depp remake with my niece. Based on the aesthetic, if you had told me the entire thing takes place in Soviet Russia I would have completely believed you. The only thing missing was a Yakov Smirnoff appearance.

I don't know about you guys, but I found the bratty kids more interesting character than Charlie, at least they had personality.

Can we talk about how the film makes zero effort to mask the fact it was shot in Germany? That reminds me of a great line from Neil Patrick Harris from the Rifftrax commentary. He calls the setting as "Englameripoland"
