I can't believe people still care about the Oscars. The Academy has been out of touch for years. I think people are caring about the Oscars because of how out of touch they are lol Don't forget these got Oscar nods: Let that sink in

I think they just pay a few people off so that some horrible movie can say "Oscar Nominated", even if they have no chance to win.

What do you mean? I know Netflix was the only one willing to put up the money for the de-aging and all that. Which is weird, because if Scorsese brings you a movie with that story, that cast, with Joe Pesci coming out of retirement, you would think anybody would give him a blank check. And didn't Ed Norton say that theaters are showing movies in sub par equipment? He says that moviegoers and film makers need to demand changes so movies are shown properly. But that's unlikely to happen now that people know they can go to streaming services. Movie theaters are heading the way of Toys R' Us and Circuit City. I wish that narrative about Cinemas financially being about to die would go away. Cinema attendances are still increasing. A film breaking the billion dollar mark is no longer a holy grail as it’s being done pretty regularly. This despite people knowing that in three or four months they’ll be able to watch the film in the comfort of their own home and not have to pay exorbitant cinema prices. If cinema was ever going to die, it would have done so in the mid-80’s when attendances were at their lowest ever ebb and VHS was at its zenith. And back then, it took films a hell of a lot longer to appear (legally) on home release. Quoting you again because figures have come out today saying UK cinema admissions only dropped by 1m last year, 176m from 177m, 2018 being the highest level of cinema-going in 50 years. So you know...Cinema is fine.

I only just learned Joker was nominated for Best Picture - I really care not one bit about the Oscars - and that is just insane to me because I did quite enjoy it but... The movie has problems. Like very clear, very easy to identify problems, including just in regards to basic logic. And it really doesn't actually seem to think the viewer is very intelligent given the way it feels the need to beat you over the head with... pretty much everything but especially the unbelievably obvious girlfriend twist.

I think somebody on here best described Joker as "a great performance from Phoenix, looking for a great movie to be in." I think it's really just the same 'token popular movie nomination that has no chance of winning' that Black Panther got. Then again, the equally mediocre Green Book walked away with Best Picture on the strength of Mahershala Ali's performance, so who knows?

I objectively see and acknowledge Jokers issues as a film. Pretty transparent. That level of confusion is how I felt about Black Panther. Cause at least Joker has Phoenix’s performance elevating it, Black Panther had..? And as has been mentioned, Green Book won. The Artist won a while back, how relevant is that film today? How about Crash?? Remember that? I’m sure examples go back and back, the honest trailer recently nailed it that no one really cares until it’s on the horizon and then er’body get angry.

I wonder if the Academy has a lot of foreign members/critics, as the more enthusiastically positive reviews Joker got outside the US (especially Europe) might explain how it got the Best Picture nod.

I'm surprised The Artist gets picked on a lot as a Best Picture Winner, I loved it. Of course it isn't surprising that a group of film professionals voted for a film that was such a well-crafted love letter to that era of cinema. The nominations that year: The Artist The Descendants Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close The Help Hugo Midnight in Paris Moneyball The Tree of Life War Horse Do people talk about The Artist much now? No, but I think that's probably also true of most best picture winners and nominees. You won't find me defending Crash though.

My friends kid was in the Artist, it’s a fine movie, I’m not trying to hate on it, just reflecting on the Oscars influence or lack thereof. But I do vividly remember Crash winning pissed me the hell off when I was in HS.

Crash winning Best Picture was like the ultimate out of touch Hollywood thing ever. A movie about racism that doesn't even come close to accurately portraying racism. It was so shallow.

Interesting reading some of the reasoning (or lack of) behind people's votes.

This part right here goes to show just how bullshit the Oscars voting is.
