As far as celebrity deaths go, besides this one, the ones that really stick out to me where I remember what I was doing when it happened were Farah Fawcett's and Michael Jackson's, Princess Diana's, and John F. Kennedy Jr. Fawcett and Jackson I was on my computer when I heard from my mom about Fawcett and then breaking news came out about Michael Jackson. For Diana, my mom and I were watching late at night at the scene of the car crash in France. JFK Jr,, we just arrived to our motel for summer vacation when it was on our room's TV when we first turned it on.
Nothing will ever be the same impact as 9/11 though. For obvious reasons, of course. Though being so close to New York and thinking my dad might've gone into the city that day for work, there was an element of fear there along with having a hard time fathoming the loss.

Kobe had a hell of a life. I would love to do a tiny fraction of what he did. And he's only five years older than me.
But Gianna just kills me. Such a beautiful kid, who would probably go on to live up to and surpass her old man.

Rachel Nichols is legit one of the best people at ESPN right now. She can address the elephants in the room regarding Kobe yet do so in such a nuanced way.

I know the playoffs are gonna be huge as always and if they meet in the WCF it will be something unworld special but for now tommorows game between clips and lakers is going to be the biggest game of this season by an unfathomable maragin.

I think they look alike. But Rachel gets subtlety and nuance. Where Steph would talk about how she almost "lost her dad" during the steroid trial.

She is so good at being so elequent but also so likeable when she talks and she is always so happy so to see her really trying to hold back tears was hard. Also really pretty lady to lol

Great interview with a witness who's also a sound engineer (and going by his hat, he formerly worked with TWA at some point). He paints a very vivid picture. From his description, the helicopter hit the mountain rotors first, so the accident probably happened very quickly and the passengers likely didn't see it coming. It's still horrible, but I'm glad they likely didn't suffer.

i don’t think there has been a death in the sports world as impactful as kobe’s literally everyone from basketball, to baseball, to soccer, to even wrestling are tweeting about this Dale Earnhardt's death was a pretty big deal. Not as big as Kobe's but not too far off.

It was gutwrenching.

I was actually posting here on an off-day when the Michael Jackson news broke- in fact, this is where I first learned about the situation. 9/11 for me was in high school, right when we first walked out into our computer class and we saw the second tower collapsing. At first we thought that we’d be let home early, but the rest of the day was just devoted to everyone watching the news coverage.

I saw the thread posted when I logged on for the first time yesterday, went "WHAT?!" Immediately went to ESPN.com and saw the headline and was in shock about it, especially since I was watching SportsCenter that morning and everyone was talking about how Lebron passed his total points and how Kobe was congratulating him. But what really got me was when I heard his daughter was on the helicopter with him. The timing of everything is just so eerie.

I remember when 9/11 went down I was in highschool and first period just ended we were headed to the next class and then it felt like the entire world stopped...teachers were scrambling to get TVs into classrooms so everyone could watch this world changing tradgedy and then it was announced we were all allowed to go home early.
I did not even contemplate what was going on untill I got home...because WOOO NO SCHOOL TODAY! lol

9/11 for me, my school did nothing to inform us of it at all, so I learned about it when my step-mom picked me up at the bus-stop that afternoon. I think she hadn't been paying much attention to the details at that point because she prefaced it with saying it was an accident.

I really hope it was a freak accident and not something that could have been prevented. That makes it a million times worse Honestly from what I heard its leaning towards the latter. They grounded all helicopters due to the thick fog and somehow the helicopter got into the air

As I've mentioned, I really don't follow basketball, but I do mourn for the families and friends of all of those people. Unfortunately, reading Facebook, a girl I went to school with, is acting as though this is her personal tragedy, yet, posting memes about it. Parents and children passed away. Their deaths, and their families' upcoming weeks and months.... just, no. There is never a time to mock death.
May these people continue to RIP, and their families have support, in this time.

The news reminded me of the morning Sean Taylor died. He was like a freak, built like a tank. It seemed like he would never die, much less in his mid-20s. It was so abrupt and senseless. I refused to believe it at the time, and it's weird to get that way about someone you never met. I imagine that is how it was a lot of people reacted to Kobe. This like superhuman guy that seemed like he wasn't gonna be one of those old rickety NBA legends. He was gonna be this slim, almost childlike dude into his 60s. If you told me Doc Gooden was gonna outlive Kobe, I'd never believe you.
But also the way it was broke left everyone scrambling because Twitter was down for a couple minutes after and TMZ was down. The news broke the internet. It's been a while since you had a question and couldn't get to the source because literally everyone was trying to get to it because the nature of the news was so unbelievable.

I was on the phone with one my friends when she told me and me and her both searched the internet for like 20 mins to confirm the news. Once Woj confirmed it my stomach turned and when I heard his kids was possibly on board that almost broke me. It’s just so sad with kids losing their lives as well. When you can break grown men you know shit is bad because everyone crying on the court was crazy
