OK, I understand that this is basically the most contagious and unpredictable disease we've seen in a long time (it seems like SARS, but like a super version of it).
It still feels like people are overreacting a little too much, cancelling this and that, refusing to go to PAX East, etc. Does the disease seem THAT contagious? Or is it the high level of uncertainty about the whole disease, is that making people more scared?

So far, there's been less than 5000 deaths from Corona.

Come on, America, you're better than that. Some would say this is karmic fate for helping to fund the production of every Fast and Furious movie.

So far, there's been less than 5000 deaths from Corona; which has had far less than a year's worth of time and has lots of active efforts trying to slow it's spread. You aren't wrong but there's a lot of missing context in stats I see tossed around. A good portion of my job is working with EMA and the better guesses right now are "Worse than normal flu but better than Spanish Flu". Too many people are acting like it's all or nothing. Either it's zero problem or everybody is gonna die. It's neither. And the indifference coming from many sources is more concerning than the virus itself. People see numbers like 1%-2% mortality rate and laugh saying it's not a big deal. It's never a big deal... until it is. If 1 out of every 100 people dropped over dead right this very instant the planet would grind to a halt. Meh enough rambling. It's a problem but it's not exciting enough for some, yet all to real for those of us that have to actually deal with it. It's not worth losing sleep over but it's not worth your life pretending it doesn't exist, either.

Better to be cautious then sorry especially when they still don't know how people are getting it Someone in the USA has now contracted the disease without having been infected by someone else

People just need to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families but don't act like it is the end of the world and don't act like it is nothing

Yeah the beer thing is likely bs He's picking apart the CNN headline, though. No, 38% of Americans wouldn't buy Corona under any circumstances because of the virus. But:and There are enough people out there conflating coronavirus with Corona beer that the beer brand has taken a hit outside its usual level of fluctuation, which has seen the share price of the company dive 8% in the past week.

Didn't SARS and Bird Flu also come from China? Get your shit together, China. China is one of the best places to start a disease. It has the airports and harbor which make it easier to spread and to get to Greenland before you evolve symptoms.

So yes the beer thing is bullshit if you are claiming nearly 40 percent of people arent drinking it due to the virus.

If you've ever been to a convention you'll know that stereotypes about nerds and atrocious hygiene come from a place of truth. There's even a term for it called "Con Funk"

So not a world-ending calamity deserving of mass panic or anything, but still nothing you want to find in your neighborhood, especially with a vaccine so far out. All the same precautions of the flu apply, so just stay clean and be careful. Having more food and water available at home so you're not going out into crowds all the time seems like a sensible thing to do (in general, not just because of the virus).
I imagine just as many people are worried about the economic fallout if the world governments don't do their due diligence and fail to control the outbreak, especially China.

I feel like the government responses around the world are stronger than I ever remember for past potential pandemics. Lots of cancelled events and quarantines.
It is probably just lessons learned from those past events being prudently applied, but after watching too many movies where the truth about something like this is suppressed before shit hits the fan, it feels like it is worse than anyone is admitting.
Wash yo hands.

This isn't exactly the Black Death, but the elderly and people with long-term health problems and compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to this and having serious or lethal complications. That and there's still a lot of unknown about the virus

South Korea went from 30 cases to 2000+ in about 10 days all because of one person graphics.reuters.com/CHINA-HEALTH-SOUTHKOREA-CLUSTERS/0100B5G33SB/index.html the graphics on this are remarkable. It's very contagious made worse by the fact that for many the symptoms are mild so people will go about their day. If you feel sick, don't be a hero and stagger in to the office or factory stay home! I think WM is in a spot of trouble tbh. 80k people all together in April when it could be peaking in the US? Hopefully it calms down when the weather warms up, there are considerably less cases in the Southern Hemisphere where its currently summer
