It's very contagious made worse by the fact that for many the symptoms are mild so people will go about their day. If you feel sick, don't be a hero and stagger in to the office or factory stay home! I think that alot easier say than done. Not many people can afford to call into work because of illness. If I got sick and had to call in, I wont have a job anymore, then Id probably wont have a home anymore either.

Wonder if this last long enough to effect the US elections.
*cue the conspiracy theories with all sides claiming it was caused by the other*

I think (as usual) the media is sensationalising the virus. Is it worthy of my attention and do I want more information? Yes. Should it be a concern? Yes.
Is it worthy of people stockpiling supplies and being afraid to leave their own house? Come the f*** on!

So some ex-coworkers and I have been going back and forth with another girl that used to work with us and the fact that she keeps posting anti-vax horseshit on Facebook. Things that are easily proved bullshit. After the president had a press conference about it and mentioned medications and a vaccine for it she’s starting conspiracy bullshit about the vaccine being how the non travel cases in the US came about and that’s how it’ll spread.
....
............
Kinda wanna tell her a corona virus vaccine is still weeks away according to scientists but you can’t fix stupid.

More people are affected by the Norovirus annually.
Coronavirus is a strain they don't have a vaccination for, but even if they did, only the vulnerable would be innoculated.
It sure won't be rolled out to healthy people who's immune system will fight it naturally.

I was gonna go to a big video game market that's taking place near my place tomorrow, but I'm not sure I should now. Personally, I think people are overreacting as usual. Do you think I should leave it this time or?

Here's my understanding of things:
It's more contagious than SARS, but also far less lethal. And it was more lethal in the original province where it spread, indicating that diagnosing it early reduces the danger (when people didn't know it was deadly, they were slower to do to the doctor, and that made a difference).
Because of this, even though there's clear downsides, I can't be too upset about all the hype this is getting. If people know to go to the doctor if they get a cough, it'll make a huge dent in deaths.

There's a community group on Facebook for my home town. My home town is Totnes, famous for its new age hippies, homeopaths, naturopaths, and tinfoil hat wearers, and the last month I've seen just about every conspiracy theory going peddled on the group page, including one about it being a man made virus activated by 5G signals (the town recently forced its council to suspend work on installing "deadly" 5G masts). It's utterly maddening.

I think it's being blown up a bit. Especially since I've seen interviews with people who have it in quarantines, who say they go up and down, get a fever, feel better, feel weak, feel better, etc. And one guy said that the hospital is just giving him lots of Gatorade.
However, the guy they put in charge of the "task force" is hilarious.

I think what makes it difficult is that this year is also supposed to be a really bad year for the flu so it's causing a lot of scares too. Now anytime there is a virus like this you want to be careful, but at the end of the day you have to be smart.

I understand the need to keep people aware, but it's dangerous and irresponsible to rile people up like this.

I'm genuinely scared of this virus, like, we could be all at risk. I don't blame people for being terrified and I genuinely don't know if we can come back from this.

I'm genuinely scared of this virus, like, we could be all at risk. If this did all start because of some bat soup in a Chinese Market, then part of me is surprised that whoever the vendor is didn't get the shit kicked out of him. Honestly, maybe the guy deserves it? The bush meat market has long been a problem in China, though they have made inroads to stopping it because of issues like this. Having said that, I can’t judge. How many of you have eaten venison, elk, pheasant, duck, or alligator? The real problem I have is the misinformation that is being put out there about this disease. I don’t care who looks bad or if panic of the disease will hurt my 403B, don’t deliberately spread misinformation. Lies can kill people.

Yeah the beer thing is likely bs That’s dumb. The only reason to not buy Corona beer is that it tastes like ass.

To put it into some perspective, regular flu kills an estimated 300,000 people every year. So far, there's been less than 5000 deaths from Corona. To put it into some perspective, regular flu kills an estimated 300,000 people every year. So far, there's been less than 5000 deaths from Corona; which has had far less than a year's worth of time and has lots of active efforts trying to slow it's spread. You aren't wrong but there's a lot of missing context in stats I see tossed around. A good portion of my job is working with EMA and the better guesses right now are "Worse than normal flu but better than Spanish Flu". Too many people are acting like it's all or nothing. Either it's zero problem or everybody is gonna die. It's neither. And the indifference coming from many sources is more concerning than the virus itself. People see numbers like 1%-2% mortality rate and laugh saying it's not a big deal. It's never a big deal... until it is. If 1 out of every 100 people dropped over dead right this very instant the planet would grind to a halt. Meh enough rambling. It's a problem but it's not exciting enough for some, yet all to real for those of us that have to actually deal with it. It's not worth losing sleep over but it's not worth your life pretending it doesn't exist, either. Another thing you have not mentioned is that normal flu only kills that many annually through a confluence of factors, most notably that so many people catch it. The flu doesn’t have quite the fatality rate, and that’s assuming China’s numbers are accurate (which is questat best).

I'm at risk, most of my family is in at risk groups, my Grandparents wouldn't survive it. People downplaying it really piss me off. People that don't follow the advice even more so (hand washing, going out when sick etc). Yet of course we'll come back. The chances of catching it are slim. Even in China 80,000 out of 1.3 billion have it, even allowing for under reporting it's a tiny percentage. Most people that get it will be fine and it's nowhere near as bad as the spanish flu, black death etc and we back from them.

I have no underlying health concerns and have always been quite fortunate in that I almost never get sick. My five year-old son, however, catches every bug going and has a harder time shaking them off than is normal for his age, so understandably my main concern is keeping him safe should it start spreading in the U.K. beyond the couple of dozen cases identified so far.

I'm genuinely scared of this virus, like, we could be all at risk. I don't blame people for being terrified and I genuinely don't know if we can come back from this. We'll be fine. I completely understand the reaction in regards to locking down cities, sending employees home, and there's nothing at all wrong with being worried. I mean, the place I work at regularly has people coming in from across the country/world so it's definitely something I think about. I just take issue with the disturbing trend (Ebola and Zika outbreaks had this too) where as soon as, or even before, the virus makes its way over to the US, you see countless articles not interested in giving facts, but carrying titles saying "You're likely to get the ___ virus" or "We're close to an epidemic". What does this do for anybody? I know there's not a large amount of information regarding COVID-19, but trying to play this up like a World War Z scenario when it appears that you can recover from this with proper treatment. I'll just say this; I was diagnosed with H1N1 back in 2009 or so. I remember going to the ER and being told I had it and it having to run its course and I was f***ing terrified, man. I legit thought I was going to die and after some unbelievably awful nights of sleeping for twenty minutes at a time in a cold sweat, it kind of felt like I was dying. These viruses are scary, no doubt, but the human body tends to be pretty damn resilient.
