Since the racing season is closing in, I feel it's time for a new thread.
The 2020 NHRA Winternationals kick off next weekend.
And then, in two weeks, the Daytona 500.

Team news in F1 Toro Rosso have been renamed Alpha Tauri for this season.
The bigger news is Racing Point will become the Aston Martin works team from 2021. The British company is making a significant investment in the sport.

John Andretti died a few days ago from complications stemming from colon cancer.
I always gave him a hard time for racing due to his lack of success, since he only won two races early in his NASCAR career and ultimately he, Joe Nemechek & Reed Sorensen became the poster boys for the sport's "start & park" problem where small crews would rather take the chump change from finishing towards the bottom than risk extensive repairs or resources driving competitively. Which resulted in the field being reduced from 43 to 38 to 40 drivers depending on the circumstances.
Still, cancer is a terrible thing to deal with.

The weird thing is, we had a guy like that racing at our local dirt track. He's been at it for over 20 years, and he's never once been remotely competitive. When asked about it, he said it like this "Some people spend their money on exotic vacations, I spend mine on my race car." I guess he just barely had the money to own one engine (410 Sprint Engines run about $40K-50K, and if you run them hard on 1/2 mile tracks, you'll only get about 12 races or so out of one before it needs to be rebuilt), and to him, owning the car and just being able to get it on the track at all was good enough to satisfy.

Well, Eric Jones outlasted 17 other cars to win an insane Busch Clash.

John Andretti was one of my favorites. I liked that I shared a birthday with him.

And the NHRA Winternationals are complete:
In Top Fuel, Doug Kalitta wins his 3rd straight Winternationals, defeating Austin Prock in the finals.
In Funny Car, "Fast Jack" Beckman takes down John Force.
In Pro Stock, Jeg Coughlin Jr. starts off his Retirement Tour taking down Jason Line, who is also on his Retirement Tour.

That season opening truck race at Daytona ended in style. Anybody else see it? Fun race. I was amazed at how they were able to hold on to those trucks at times and I was in line with the energy from the kid who came in second. That was some infectious stuff that just draws ya in.
