Don't know why I didn't think to post Candy's crowning achievement of skit-show improv on SCTV, from their second season Christmas episode:

My only exposure to him has been Home Alone, but he was really good in that and his character played a huge part in resolving the plot in that film.

Allow me to introduce myself.
Gus Polinski

The Kenosha Kickers?
No?
That’s okay I thought you might have recognized–
Anyways I had a few hits a few years ago.
That’s why I…
Polka, Polka, Polka?
Polka, polka, polka… No?
Twin Lakes Polka…
Domavougi Polka A.K.A.
Kiss me polka…polka twist?

The two times I have rented a cabin in the woods for a vacation, there was a copy of The Great Outdoors in the cabin. First time was way out in rural Kentucky. Place came with a vcr and a few tapes to watch. Then 4 years ago we went up near Gatlinberg for a week and the cabin had dvd players, and yep they had a dvd copy of The Great Outdoors.
Such a great film that feels like it has been forgotten. Candy could almost save any film. And had so much more range than people usually realize.

He would have been a very good dramatic actor too. He was awesome as that shady lawyer in JFK.

if you're a fan of isekai anime (main character dies then gets reincarnated/somehow transported into a fantasy world as the hero) John Candy originated the genre with "Delirious"

The oft forgotten Volunteers is another hidden gem. Not just for John Candy, but to get to watch Tom Hanks play a smarmy sleazebag.

Armed and Dangerous, in which John co-stars with Eugene Levy as security guards caught up in a corrupt union theft racket, is a hidden gem in his filmography.
Also stars Tiny Lister and a young Meg Ryan!

He did so much with so little time with us. And was only just beginning to realize his potential as an actor.
I’ll go for an underrated forgotten - Summer Rental. Him playing off Rip Torn is fantastic.

When he's in the car talking to himself with that sad music playing always gets me. Sitting out there wishing his wife were there with him. "But I guess, that's not going to happen." Or when Neal gets off the train and goes back to the station to find Del just sitting there. "Arent you going home?" "I don't have a home. Marie died 8 years ago." TEARS!!! This thread reminded me that I’ve never actually seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I’ve just corrected that, and in addition to the scenes mentioned above his ‘I like me’ speech is moving without being cheesy. However, his expression when Steve Martin is verbally abusing him is perfectly poised between anger and hurt, and says more than any speech possibly could.
