I was just randomly thinking about the series Sex and the City and how it seemed to be very popular when it was around and even spawned a movie adaption, but it seems like a distant and foggy memory that isn't really talked about much since it ended.
What are other things that were big for a while and then dissapeared from even nostalgic rememberance?
I don't mean something like James Cameron's Avatar, which was a short lived cultural event of the time.
I'm talking about things that were more long-lasting.

I was toying with starting a thread about FX's seemingly forgotten shows. During the 00s, they had some of the absolute best television. I remember how big Nip/Tuck in particular was between season 2 and 3.
I just this very second concluded my rewatch of The Shield, which was on then and an absolute in your face visceral cop show that was on at that time. In addition, I remember the shows Damages and Rescue Me, but I personally never watched them.
Huge shows at the time, but they've just disappeared from pop culture. I think the only FX show that made it out of that black hole is It's Always Sunny.

Sex and the City probably doesn't get talked about as much now because of how dreadful the second film was. First one had issues, too, but the second was almost parody.

Scrubs and Community. When they were on, they were beloved shows with cult followings that spawned tons of memes, gifs, and quotes.
Now both of these shows seem sort of forgotten.

AnnaSophia Robb could hardly look less like Carrie Bradshaw, so that was kind of an odd casting decision.

Entourage for a while was *huge* with a large audience, and then it just kinda faded.

NYPD Blue.
Even got some of the actors onto WrestleMania XI.
Now it's all but forgotten.

Avatar was one of the most successful movies of all time and has absolutely zero lasting cultural impact.

I think the key difference is that a lot of the stuff that was big but faded didn't fall into the broad category that is geek culture. Hill Street Blues was *the* realistic police precinct drama of the 80's. Then Steven Bochco created NYPD Blue in the 90s & it became *the* police precinct drama & Hill Street Blues exited popular culture. Because there aren't conventions, there aren't film series or continuations set in the same universe for police precinct dramas. The same thing happened to NYPD Blues after it ended of course. Shows like that exist and is forgotten in a way that sci-fi/fantasty/horror/anime/comic book content is not.

Wow, I just enacted the scenario of my own thread because I don't even remember there being a 2nd movie. Some of the replies have made me think about an even more confusing occurance: Popular media that has been around through even recent years, whether through revivals or just never really going away...they suffer the same fate. Example being Will and Grace. That show was huge and an important benchmark in tv history and from what I could tell, it came back with little fanfare not too long ago. It can't be just a "geek culture" thing because people still talk about Seinfeld for example to this day. Maybe not to the level of it's heyday, but certainly more than most popular media of yesteryear (then again, it was basically television's answer to Nirvana: everything changed). I don't want to derail the thread so I will list some examples of my own. -The OC -West Wing -Dharma and Greg (granted, it was like the Nickelback or Creed of sitcoms...so this makes sense) -Every MTV reality show

This is going back further but how about the Billy Jack movies? The first couple were hugely popular in the 1970s but when was the last time anyone talked about those? I do kinda think there is a decent movie somewhere in the 1971 film, but it's so insanely dated in that hippie era and all of the bad sketch comedy crap that Howard Hesseman and those guys did. Might be a decent role for Keanu Reeves actually.

The Hobbit series, three long movies, great casting and good cgi but very little from the whole saga stands out. Much weaker source material than lotr tbf.

If you go back to the early days of cinema, there were movie franchises that had tons of sequels, merchandise, and adaptations into radio, TV, comics, novels, etc. that are all but forgotten today - the Thin Man, the Falcon, Charlie Chan, Jungle Jim, Henry Aldridge, Andy Hardy, the Three Mesquiteers, just to name a few.
Also, a lot of forgotten comic strips characters were household names back in the early 20th century, and were turned into movies, toys, comics, radio and TV shows, board games, and even musicals - Li'l Abner, Terry & the Pirates, Little Orphan Annie, Krazy Kat, Barney Google, Buster Brown, and many more.

Eh, they still are all those things. As you said, they had cult followings. They're not going to be talked about that much unless you're in the right circles.

When Oprah was on syndicated television, every move she made, every guest she had, everything she touched was the talk of everyone. Once she moved to her 'own network', the buzz around her slowly started to be replace with other noise.
Also, there was a time when talk about Howard Stern was everywhere, but after he moved from a radio format where people could listen to him for FREE and to a format to where you had to PAY to be outraged by what he said, I noticed that his name didn't pop up in the news quite as much.
