I hated when he wore that shitty little tracksuit. To me, he went from main eventer to absolute jobber with that change alone. The first thing I think about when I picture the jumpsuit is Kane lifting him into the corner like you would a child before eliminating him in the Rumble. That's the moment when it was really cemented that he was a bottom-of-the-card act. In one year he went from ending Angle's undefeated streak to being dumped out of the Rumble like a child in ten seconds.

I think Tazz was signed to help pad out the roster, with a huge push never planned.

I can see why he might have got a reputation for being unsafe if something I saw posted here once is true - that Tazz would tell his opponents not to go up for his suplexes but just let him throw you because otherwise you'd land badly? Was that Tazz? Because I definitely can't imagine anybody above curtain-jerker being willing to just let this ECW scrub come in and throw them around even if it was actually safe.

I think he'd have had a run more similar to RVD had his health not been garbage. In good health, I can certainly see him as a title challenger for Eddie in '04.

Do I think he would've gotten the World title in 2000 WWF? No, but if he did have the surgery, I can see them at least giving him a semi-dominant IC run.

If it wasn't for his neck issues, what could they have done with him, especially with the Radicalz and their red hot momentum from WCW making a splash? I would've made him play a dominate role in the hardcore division, especially with his ECW background. This would have been a great strategy. Have him really legitimise the division, so it's not just a throwaway segment, or an excuse to brawl around the building. Have the brawling and weapons play a part in telling the story in kick ass, stiff, no holds barred action. Well we already had Steve Blackman filling in that role, and doing a good job too. Wouldn't hurt for Tazz to get a few runs during that time(I'm not talking about his three reigns that lasted a minute each) either.

Just heard JR’s podcast and he isn’t known as a liar so here it goes, apparently there were big plans for Taz but during the match Vince soured on him and felt he was extremely unsafe. This is the likely scenario, and we shouldn't second guess the boss on this one.

Stories like this make me further wonder about how talent scouting works in WWE.
And stories like this make me realize the answer is “Mostly badly”.

Honestly, once you're feuding with the commentators and there isn't even a title involved is when you're a BOTC geek.
