How often has this happened?
Has it ever happened where a non-American got a USA chant, while an American was playing an anti-American character? Has it happened unintentionally?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure someone like Tajiri or Regal got a USA chant when facing off against La Resistance with Robert Conway in the tag team.
It's really not that big of deal, since the chant is more about antagonizing the anti-American heel, but counter productive when the face foreigner is supposed to make a comeback.

I always think it's funny when USA chants happen when either none of the wrestlers are from the US, or if all of them are. I think Duggan got a USA chant against Bossman/Big Bubba Rogers at least once.

I guess the best example is Bret vs. Yoko at WM 9. Bret's mom was American, right? So I guess they were half right.

Not sure if this applies but there was a match between Zeke Jackson (from South America) and Wade Barrett (from England) and the crowd started chanting 'USA, USA' which led to this exchange on commentary
Cole: "I find it funny the crowd are chanting this." Booker: "What do you mean?" Cole: "Well neither men are from the US." Booker: ".......yeah but Zeke loves America."

This thread reminds me of the Alliance vs. Mercenaries match at Survivor Series 90. In kayfabe, Sgt. Slaughter was a traitor who aligned himself with evil foreigners. Nikolai Volkoff's team were good foreigners, and the fans were chanting "USA" in support of them. In reality, 4 of the 8 wrestlers in that match were born in the United States

I was told he was from the Orient!

Eight-man tag on Raw in 2004 - Regal, Tajiri, Benoit, and Rhyno vs. La Resistance, Batista, and Flair. My memory is fuzzy on this but one of the first three members of the face team was in the ring with a member of La Resistance, and the crowd almost immediately started chanting USA. It was so absurd that even commentary had to point out that 3/4 of the team wasn't even American.

Unless, you're referring to the Orient Express, at which case they were still Sato & Tanaka, before Paul Diamond came along.
