He's on the list certainly. In baseball terms he's a five tool guy

imo, my hot take is that it's HBK somewhat easily, and I don't mean that as a knock to other greats. It's just that his past reputation leads to others discrediting him.

Savage was a far better promo than HBK. Admittedly HBK is probably the best in-ring performer that WWE has ever had but even then I'd argue Savage was a more diverse in-ring performer both in terms of the styles of matches he was able to have and also changing how he fought depending on his opponent and his heel/face status at the time.

There are guys who edge Savage in one department or another but, yeah, I think he's the greatest all-rounder. Excellent at everything. My favourite feud in WCW was the ddp vs savage from 1997. And to see the videos of DDP after randy savage died about how giving randy was during that feud and yes he won the feud but DDP was made after that because randy Savage wasn't like the guy in the black who had such a fragile ego.
That's a trait that absolutely shouldn't be overlooked in a discussion like this - a performer who made/makes their opponents look great as well as themselves.

Randy Savage Jake Roberts Mr Perfect
Should be poster guys in every school for what every wrestler should strive to be. They are perfect examples of how you deliver the character, how you distinctively brand your character and how you own the ring you are in with someone.

Michaels is right there for me with him. Savage was a truly amazing talent. His promos were insane most of the time, but he told great stories with them. Fully agree with Curt Hennig too.

We talk about 5 tool guys and the 10/10/10 scale, but to me, the best of the best are the ones who be beloved faces and loathed heels.

I think Hogan deserves a lot of consideration for that distinction. Great promo. Worked the crowd at an elite level. Could work when he wanted to (his WCW days were a combination of being unmotivated and coasting, which isn’t surprising for anyone who worked for WCW at the time). Was equally good at being a face and a heel. I saw a recent video of Rock and Hogan discussing their WM match (separately), and both talked about creating the match on the fly and improvising based off crowd reaction, and I think that’s a huge part of what makes wrestling great.
Savage is certainly up there, as is Austin, Rock, Flair, Bret, Shawn, etc. It gets to be pretty subjective when you try to narrow it down.

I definitely think he is in the discussion. Someone I haven't seen mentioned so far and who was under the radar for me until he died and Flair put him over huge is Bobby Heenan. He could take bumps like no one else, was a hell of a worker when he did wrestle, is the greatest manager of all time, was part of best commentary team of all time, and towards the end of his career was actually a face or tweener against the NWO.

You also have to add in that Savage was a huge crossover megastar that drew big money for years and years.
In terms of being the all round greatest performer in wrestling there's only Ric Flair in his league I think.
