AMC banning Universal movies over the whole Trolls fiasco was the nail in the coffin. They can't make a power play move like that when there's other better theaters and when you're fighting to survive. The time was coming sooner rather than later but with the whole Trolls thing and the Corona virus, that just sped up the doomsday clock.

That would really suck. I loved being an A-List member.

My local theater is an AMC. How shitty it would be if it went out of business.

This would be great news for local theater chains. It would allow them to expand into new markets.

This would suck for me, because within my city limits there are literally only two major theaters that aren't AMC.
Additionally it is AMC around here that is most likely to carry the Fathom Events screenings, which include that overwhelming majority of the anime film screenings I manage to see on the big screen. Losing AMC would royally suck for me.

I can't say I'd miss AMC too much; there's a good theater not far from my place that's a much smaller yet better chain that'll still carry things like Fathom Events I want to see. However, there's no denying that AMC's stranglehold on the marketplace makes it an 800 pound gorilla in the room; remove it, and lots and lots of communities will have no movie theaters. Even around here, while I have that local Kerasotes place I prefer, there's still at least four AMCs within reasonable driving distance of me (part of living in a densely populated area like northern New Jersey) and they'll sometimes run Events that the other place doesn't, so I at least like having them as an option. I do remember when the first big AMC opened in my area way back when I was a teen, circa 2000 or so, and what a huge deal it was, though, kind of mind-blowing for me at that point.

AMCs aren't just going to shut down for good, somebody else will buy them. They're already situated in cities, some are the only theaters in decent sized towns. And they've already got everything set up, there's no need to build everything. Just take it over, change the logos, and you've maybe gotta change a few other things. But you're already set.

The largest movie theatre chain in the world doesn't think it can exist anymore.
Holy crap.

Funnily enough, exactly like how AMC operated their expansion. The reason my city is so overwhelmingly AMC is because they straight up bought many of the smaller theaters around town and just...slapped AMC logos on everything, and more or less called it a day. Some of the places they tossed in their pretty badass self-serve soda machines, that's about it.

I think we live in the same town and I too love the Kerasotes in Secaucus. I'm sad that a lot of the theaters I had when I was younger are closing. Like the one in Edgewater, the one by the Turnpike, and Frank's in Bayonne (which admittedly was terrible)

This would be great news for local theater chains. It would allow them to expand into new markets. If anything it probably just allows Regal to move in to new markets, or for movie theaters to pretty much become a niche thing.

Yeah, but meanwhile, if you wanted to show old movies for retro night, the FOX/Disney merger screwed that up as Disney is just going to put a bunch of films into "the vault" rather than letting smaller theaters license them for screenings. So, it's a push.

Let's be honest, most theaters are hanging on by threads and only stay in business thanks to Disney and Pixar blockbusters.

With all of the streaming options out there combined with the cost of going to a movie, this was inevitable.

Up here the only big chain we have is Famous Players. We have a massive theater but I have No idea how it's doing and I wonder what would happen if it went under as it's the only theater in town (and I do not live in a small town)

They allowed theaters to reopen here weeks ago. I've occasionally checked to see if there's any showtimes at the chains, but I have not seen anything advertised.
Meanwhile the local boutique theatre seems to be moving forward with their summer schedule of remastered classics, and some of those showings appear to be sold out.
How much of this is just AMC not having much to attract audiences for the foreseeable future, even if they're willing to buy tickets? Studios have to play ball too.

This would be great news for local theater chains. It would allow them to expand into new markets. The biggest cinema chain going out of business would surely be bad news for every cinema, whether it’s a smaller independent one or part of a huge chain? Studios will lose a ton of revenue from their films not being shown on thousands of screens, so the cost of film hire will go up massively for all other cinemas. Yes, they’ll potentially increase their attendance from having less competition in the area but would smaller chains be able to pay the inevitable increase in film hire?
