Ehhh They were playing with fire early in trying to keep the Olympics alive but have since done a good job in keeping everything safe I remember seeing a lot more facemasks in the crowd than usual during New Beginning. I remember thinking then "Yeah, they'll probably do OK." It's a cultural thing, as has been mentioned. They messed up not responding with better testing like Taiwan and others did but, they knew what to do afterwards. But on topic, I really hope Despy goes far. I think he's the most underrated wrestler in NJPW. I expect the tournament to deliver a few surprises but I wouldn't blame them for going chalk as well in giving people the big matchups they want to see after a few months

I think he's the most underrated wrestler in NJPW. Agreed, that's the attraction of the first round match to me. Most underrated junior vs most underrated heavyweight, and they're both brawlers. Hopefully some of the foreign guys can make the July shows, with it still being a month out.

Just took a look at the brackets, I'd be willing to bet good money on Hiromu winning. It easily makes the most sense, this decides the Dominion challenger, I don't see them doing some shock out of left field winner here. Hiromu has a good story for it, it's a big enough match to make sense at Dominion, and it's too quick to go back to Okada. Not saying I wouldn’t mind seeing this, but logistically Hiromu would have to beat Okada for it to happen. I don’t think that will happen. It could happen, say travel restrictions are cleared and Jay White returns and gets him counted out.

Japan hasn't lifted travel restrictions yet, they're beginning to discuss travel restrictions being lifted but it's happening in phases. Gotcha. Japan has done an amazing job without every really locking down. FWIW, Tama and Karl have said they don't expect to go to Japan for the remainder of 2020. It could just be their hunch, but they spoke about it on Tama's podcast and seemed pretty sure about their wording.

Well CMLL continues to be a dirtbag promotion as they had threatened New Japan bringing over and using Dragon Lee after they had fired him. Threatening to cut ties and end the working relationship between the two promotions as well as Lee was warned and threatened after he left the promotion that his career would be dead and CMLL made him what he was.

I was wondering if and when CMLL would say anything about New Japan using Dragon Lee. They are really going down the toilet lately and might not want to upset their most powerful ally over something so petty.

Would also make many of their own mad as FantasticaMania is often a CMLL talent's biggest payday that they get for the year.
The promotion has a hive mentality where their the only ones who matter and do wrestling correctly and those who speak out or leave are traitors. Which is why they are so set on doing the same thing week after week refusing to adapt or change.

As scummy as WWE has been over the past few years, and as mindbogglingly incompetent as ROH has been, I don't think there's a single company that's done more to burn through all international goodwill than CMLL.

Why can't Jay White travel? Hasn't New Zealand all but contained the virus? I think Jay's actually living in the US now, though I could be wrong about that. However, I know Fale is usually in Japan but apparently he was in New Zealand once lockdown began. But yeah, while the Japanese leadership, in their desire to have the Olympics go off without a hitch, didn't really cover themselves in glory early on with the pandemic, it's seeming more and more clear that the Japanese and wider east-Asian tendency to have a mask ready when a virus/disease is going around is really paying dividends in terms of keeping infection rates low, so combining that with slow-and-steady approaches to allowing crowds at indoor venues (e.g. the Osaka Jo shows only being something like 33% capacity this summer), they should be able to make things work at least decently without creating inordinate risks.

NJPW aired a short teaser VTR for a "debuting" wrestler they're calling the Grand Master.
Wonder who it is. Kawato?

Although the name sounds like a Dungeons & Dragons Cosplayer who'd team with Brandon Cutler.
