hey guys, hope everyone's doin well and hope everyone is happy with their picks this round. I'm not normally one for self promotion, but I just uploaded a mix on Soundcloud and it'd be pretty cool if people checked it out. Not sure if any of you guys are into EDM/house music but it's mostly that. Honestly if it's not your cup of tea I feel that but if you wanna just give it a click to get the numbers up that'd be cool too. Taking bedroom DJing more seriously has forsure been one of the more enjoyable aspects of quarantine (besides this game of course).

After a lot of careful math and lots of confirming, it's time to announce the scores for Round 2: Gus Makes A Godawful Who Joke! All the songs were sent to the judges for scoring, HOWEVER they couldn't score their own team's songs. If they so chose, they could award their favorite song from their team a 3 point bonus. The remaining songs were scored from 1 to 12, with 1 being their least favorite and 12 being their most. This will be how every non-Sing Off round is scored until the tournament begins. And with that quick scoring explanation given, it's time to reveal our scores (and for me to update the first post).... I'll be starting with the lowest score and working my way up. Don't worry if you're near the bottom as there is plenty of game yet to go before the first Sing-Off. 1n 16th with 9 points is someone who went for one of America's greatest comic musicians.... {Spoiler}Brad, who chose "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" by Ray Stevens! Taking 15th and his team's bonus with 13 points is a song from a well-respected singer/songwriter of our times.... {Spoiler}"One Down" by Ben Folds, as chosen by BrodieTheSlayer! With 14th place, 14 points and his team's bonus, our next entrant is showing plenty of signs of keeping it together.... {Spoiler}Joker, who went with "The Art Of Falling Apart" by Soft Cell! Tied for 12th place with 15 points each are two very distinct choices: a legendary metal band covering another legendary metal band, and a 70s classic that not only stunned me because it hadn't been picked yet in all the years we've been doing this, but also took down a team bonus. Those two contestants are... {Spoiler}Cthulhu, who chose Motorhead's Grammy-winning cover of Metallica's "Whiplash", and Futureraven, who scored the bonus with "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac! A supergroup from the 2000s snagged 19 points for our 11th place finisher this round.... {Spoiler}"Fall To Pieces" by Velvet Revolver, selected by fw91! Cracking the Top 10 with 20 points is an autobiographical song by a blues legend picked by... {Spoiler}Jazzman, who broke out "Story Of Bo Diddley" by Bo Diddley! At 9th with 21 points is someone whose spot doesn't feel wrong.... {Spoiler}Stevie Budd, who chose grunge icons Nirvana and "You Know You're Right"! 8th place and 22 ( 22?! OH MAN!) points go to someone who went a bit of a more morose path of sorts.... {Spoiler}suave, who selected "Back When I Was 4" by Jeffery Lewis! Going the Hamilton-inspired route earned our 7th place entrant 23 points.... {Spoiler}chaos, who picked "Who Tells Your Story" by The Roots ft. Common and Ingrid Michaelson! Locked in a tie for 5th with 24 points each are two very, very different songs entirely.... {Spoiler}Dub H, who went the modern rock route with "Rock And Roll Thugs" by Icon For Hire, and RadG, who dipped into some seldom-seen 70s material with "O Caroline" by Matching Mole! Sole possession of 4th at 25 points certainly was what this contestant wanted or close to it.... {Spoiler}J, who took "everything i wanted" by Billie Eilish! Incredibly, we had a THIRD tie in this round, which means.... {Spoiler}Kevin Hamilton, DASH, and Clash? It's down to the three of you. That tie is in 2nd place and 26 points, with two icons getting selected: one, a punk band of quite a bit of renown, the other, an 80s legend.... {Spoiler}DASH, who picked "My Orphan Year (Acoustic)" by NOFX, and Clash, who selected "My Name Is Prince" by Prince & The New Power Generation! And that means, striding to the top of our first scoring round at 28 points and his team bonus, our Rd2 winner is.... {Spoiler}KEVIN HAMILTON! KH went the emphatic rap route with "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" by Big Daddy Kane! Well done! ROUND SCORES: {Spoiler}1. I thought this was a tremendous intro round! It was exciting to see the different musical genres and time periods represented. Here are my notes for the round. My team: {Spoiler}{Spoiler} 1st. The Art of Falling Apart - Soft Cell 2nd. My Name is Prince - Prince & The New Power Generation 3rd. Story of Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley 4th. Mississippi Squirrel Revival - Ray Stevens
1. The Art of Falling Apart - Soft Cell - +3 Bonus: My first proper mark out moment of the game. Soft Cell's primarily remembered for their cover of Tainted Love but they had a deeper body of work, including this very dark, psuedo-Industrial dance track. Marc Almond's harrowing vocals compliment these almost construction equipment-like beats perfectly and the song's intensity rises and rises. Besides the main verse and beat, there is ton of background noises, like scraping, that add texture to the song. The duo use keyboards to change up the sound every time the verse returns, using every trick they can, including actually playing it like a piano. I'm just surprised to see this in this round and I think it's edginess lends itself well to the Round idea.
2. My Name is Prince - Prince & The New Power Generation: This is a fantastic time to use one of the true heavy hitters in this game. The song embodies the spirit of the Round, heralding the mature arrival of a transcendent artist. How many musicians have the swagger, the self-confidence to say that God made him on the seventh day and actually sound convincing? The song's funky bassline, record scratching, backing vocals, and screeching guitars propel it forward in both a rich and relentless fashion. The highlight to me is the rap by Tony M, which sums up this audacious rock/funk/hybrid. Some of lyrics left me scratching my head but that's very minor in comparison to what this song accomplishes.
3. Story of Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley : My team continues to rise to the challenge of this Round. This pick shows a deep grasp of music and chooses a time period that plays well with the notion of introducing yourself and talking about yourself as an artist. Bo Diddley epitomizes what it means to be cool and his personality comes out during every second of the song. He's funny at times, poignant at others, and, in wrestling terms, his persona is him dialed up to ten. I love the asides he makes, the recap and somewhat stream of consciousness way he talks about his life, and that is all marvelously accompanied by his fun guitar playing and the simple but driving drumming. I loved when he said he was a killer-diller. Just keep doing what you're doing because this is just so refreshing to hear.
4. Mississippi Squirrel Revival - Ray Stevens : This a very funny song from one of the masters of the genre but I feel like this would have worked better in a more specialized round, so maybe a bit early to use it. Ray Stevens is a pretty good singer overall, with a rich tone, but the song slows down a bit when he's talking to further along the story. Some of the musical references are a bit silly. The guitar work and, especially, the background gospel choir, add a ton to the performance, keeping it from being one note. The song kind of drags a bit and just ends. I wish there was a bit more of a musical change after the church changed its ways.
Other Players: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}
Other Songs, Rank 12-1
12 pts: O Caroline - Matching Mole
11 pts: Back When I Was 4 - Jeffrey Lewis
10 pts: Ain't No High Steppin' - Big Daddy Kane
9 pts: My Orphan Year (Acoustic) - NOFX
8 pts: Who Tells Your Story - The Roots ft. Common and Ingrid Michaelson
7 pts: Fall To Pieces - Velvet Revolver
6 pts: everything i wanted - Billie Eilish
5 pts: You Know You're Right - Nirvana
4 pts: Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
3 pts: One Down - Ben Folds
2 pts: Whiplash - Motorhead
1 pt: Rock And Roll Thugs - Icon For Hire
Tier Rankings: Grouping the songs together, where the songs could have changed order for me
1st tier:
O Caroline - Matching Mole
Back When I Was 4 - Jeffrey Lewis
Ain't No High Steppin' - Big Daddy Kane
2nd tier:
My Orphan Year (Acoustic) - NOFX
Who Tells Your Story - The Roots ft. Common and Ingrid Michaelson
Fall To Pieces - Velvet Revolver
everything i wanted - Billie Eilish
You Know You're Right - Nirvana
3rd Tier:
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
One Down - Ben Folds
Whiplash - Motorhead
Rock And Roll Thugs - Icon For Hire
12. O Caroline - Matching Mole - Tremendous build to the vocals. I love the shimmering, almost 70's singer-songwriter sound (edit- that's because it is indeed from that time period) that then gets backed a bit with indie rock flourishes here and there. A bit of a risk to go with a melancholy song this early but it pays off for me. I can certainly relate to the feelings expressed and the lyrics are simple and effective. Fantastic production, with the piano (and flute?) standing out. The vocals are perfect for what the song is doing.
11. Back When I Was 4- Jeffrey Lewis - Fantastic storytelling here. The minimalism of the guitar playing and the rambling vocals build to an amazing moment where the singer talks about not having anything left, not even the goldfish, and the music slows down and becomes very sad. Parts of the story, like him finding love late in life and writing silly songs for his daughter, stand out and the implication that he hasn't gone anywhere or at least nothing dramatic has happened with the two mentions of the stoop lend a lot of meaning to the song. This wouldn't be a song for everyone but I love how stark this pick is.
10. Ain't No High Steppin' - Big Daddy Kane - I think that it was a great strategy to go with hip-hop for this round, as it is a genre that often seems autobiographical in nature. Big Daddy Kane's persona is so confident and assured, coming off as the epitome of cool. His flow is precise and rich, perfectly matching the rather straightforward beat. I love how the lyrics introduce vivid imagery, like a machete or Samson, that then get a lyrical payoff with the next few lines. There's enough samples and record scratching to add interest to the beat, which just serves to compliment Big Daddy Kane's impeccable rapping.
9. My Orphan Year (Acoustic) - NOFX - Like the Jeffrey Lewis song, My Orphan Year has a simplicity that adds to its power. With just the simple guitar playing, a listener can focus on the emotion of the vocals, which have an amateur-ish quality that helps express the mixture of sadness, regret, and resignation in the song. You can contrast the singer's relationships with his parents using the lyrics without changing the guitar playing. There's an intriguing element with how homogenous the song is, which works well with the idea that his orphan year is a result of losing both his parents. I'm not necessarily a proponent of less is more but it's effective here.
8. Who Tells Your Story - The Roots ft. Common and Ingrid Michaelson - Very intense with a rich mixture of powerful rapping and sweet r&b vocals. It's grand and theatrical; I marked out with the curtain call mention. There's a great deal of ambition at work here and I completely bought the more visionary aspects of the story. It feels very modern and appropriate to what's happening now, which should be the aim of using history to explore timeless themes. The beat, with its flourishes here and there, keeps the sound moving and Ingrid Michaelson's singing is gorgeous. Everything here is just on an epic scale.
7. Fall To Pieces - Velvet Revolver - You take the defining hard rock band of the late 80's and couple them with one of alternative rock's most charismatic front men and you get a pretty smooth hybrid sound. There's an emotional weight here that might be unexpected: you could have any number of singers perform this but most wouldn't be able to match the pathos of Weiland's performance. There's a sadness at work in the video which acknowledges his real life demons that would eventually claim him. The song has an, ultimately, optimistic tinge, with Slash's soaring solo the musical center. It's quite beautiful and an update on the GnR sound (and shout out to Wasted Youth), with a guy baring his soul on vocals.
6. everything i wanted - Billie Eilish - The highlight is, of course, her voice. There's an enigmatic quality to Billie Ellish's singing, which is very emotional with a hint of coldness. It's almost surreal, dream-like at times. The beat fleshes out her vocals and the piano works as an effective counterpoint. A neat detail occurs when her vocals soar a bit when she quotes the person she's singing about. There are also times when the beat is more subdued, and times where her vocals are layered, so a good deal of production wizardy that successfully enhances a very talented singer. Good pick for the round and another artist used early.
5. You Know You're Right - Nirvana - I love Nirvana and was excited when this song was first released. It captures their more angry, at least on the surface, side and, for me, some of their nuance gets lost. I do love the bass line to the song and Krist Novoselic is just never talked enough about. Cobain's vocals snarl and his guitar work are just one of a kind, and the intensity is on display here. I do miss some of the trippy imagery that usually goes into his lyrics but this is a battering ram of a song that makes you wonder how they would have evolved as a band. Dave Grohl also, as always, sounds like a goddamn machine here, just an incredible talent.
4. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac - Legendary song, one that I've heard countless times in my friend's car after his breakup in college. The drumming is amazing here and I don't think the vocals quite live up to it. Fleetwood Mac seemed to really hit its strengths, imo, whenever Stevie Nicks was vocally at the center. Still, there's a ton of emotional impact here. The guitar work is thrilling, with a fantastic solo and this is a song that hit the theme on squarely the head. The outro is damn good, too so, overall, I think this is a great pick with some flaws (for me anyway), in a pretty strong round.
3. One Down - Ben Folds - I appreciate the use of the live version here, as this kind of song benefits from the live sound and the audience reaction. I enjoy Ben Folds piano playing more than his vocals here. I'm not sure how serious I'm supposed to take the song. It's funny and aims to be poignant, but it also seems slight. It's clever but kind of goes to the whining famous musician route that he himself calls out in the sing, which could be intentional irony. It's a great idea to sing about trying to, well, get through a song or some other task but I feel like there are other songs that intrigued me more. I will say that live songs tend to get my attention and might be a strategy to keep in mind.
2. Whiplash - Motorhead - I'm not sure if choosing a cover is the best way to approach this round. Motorhead almost always delivers when it comes to covers, so I can see the rationale here. It's definitely in their musical vein, but it seems a bit like Ace of Spades. That's their signature sound and it's very comfortable, which hurts it in a round where there was a good deal of musical risk-taking. I think this would have done better in a more specialized round. The frentic pace and Lemmy's trademark vocals are quite enjoyable but it's a bit safe for them. That said, I do like the guitar solo quite a bit and the transition before it.
1. Rock And Roll Thugs - Icon For Hire - I'd rather not put any song at the bottom because I didn't dislike by of the songs but I felt this one was the least convincing. It's a tough genre for me, this hybrid rock/metal-punk pop because I wish there was more edge or more pop leanings. For me, it needs to land more on one side. I enjoy the inagery, especially the digging/burying metaphors. The vocals are inconsistent for me, and try to do too many things. The music similar, as it seems over-produced. It's not bad and there some good musical ideas working here but it's not as polished as other songs here.

So before I announce Rd3's theme, I have to make a serious correction.
When Tyger sent me his initial rankings, he had "Who Tells Your Story" at 6 points and "everything i wanted" at 8. However, what I failed to notice was that he sent a modified list that switched the two. This doesn't affect the top three but it does affect two players. What it means is J and chaos are switching places (J now 7, chaos now 5).
Updated scores are:
Team Zack Morris:
1. Kevin Hamilton: 28 2. Dub H: 24 3. Stevie Budd: 21 4. fw91: 19
Team Tyger:
1. Clash: 26 2. Jazzman: 20 3. Joker: 14 4. Brad: 9
Team Brainbustaaah!:
1. DASH: 26 2. J: 23 3. suave: 22 4. Futureraven: 15
Team Square:
1. chaos: 25 2. RadG: 24 3. Cthulhu: 15 4. BTS: 13
With that done and in hopes that I ACTUALLY PAY f***ING ATTENTION NEXT TIME, it's time to go to Rd3!
*tries to find something from Monty Python's Flying Circus or Bit Of Fry And Laurie but can't find anything certifiably board-safe*
Screw it:
ROUND 3: IN MEMORY OF JOHANN GAMBOLPUTTY DE VON AUSFERN....
For this round, select songs where there is someone's name featured in either the title or the lyrics.
DEADLINE IS 4PM CDT ON SATURDAY.
