Hi, my name is Tyger or Jason, if you prefer. I initially found my way into these competition games as a judge for the first Pop Culture Scavenger Hunt game, which led me to sign-up for FAN Idol Season VII, where I had the distinction of being eliminated twice before becoming a judge (one of the crazier Seasons). I then hosted Season VIII, loved doing so, and then played in, judged in, and ultimately hosted an incredibly long Season IX. I ended up playing in Season X, earning a Judge's Save in a Sing-Off against J, and was eliminated before the finale. Then I judged in Season XI and hosted the last season, Season XII.
So, as you can see, crazy ups and downs but sticking with Idol and handling its craziness is probably why I was modded.
Alright now, for this season. Here's my thoughts on judging and being a team mentor:
I love variety. I have my favorite bands and musical genres but I like to think I'm open-minded to embracing sounds that are new and exciting. I know pretty much everyone who's playing, I've talked to them in pm as they submitted their music, and I have a pretty good idea of what they are like as a player.
So, at this point in Idol and for this game, I'm looking for two things that contradict each other but could very well be the path to the next Idol:
1. Choose music that flies in the face of what you usually choose
and
2. Choose music that embodies, refines, and ultimately exemplifies your musical taste and knowledge
Be yourself. The Final Six in Season VIII all had different styles. You could tell who picked what and it was amazing because it was at such a high level.
I want a team that is fully confident in how they play and whose confidence allows them to take risks. Those risks will make this a fun season for them and hopefully they'll discover more about themselves as music lovers.
As for me as a player? I try to use as many musical genres and time periods as I can. Post-Punk, Alternative Rock, New Wave are in my wheelhouse but, in my time of playing, I've chosen Punk, African Funk, Psychobilly, Jazz, Classical music, Shoegaze, Singer-Songwriter, Grunge, Post-Rock, J-Pop, Guitar based Gospel, Classically inspired Mexican rock, Hip-Hop, and more. I don't know everything, I don't have any Idol titles of my own, but I've devised more rounds than any other host and I love to be surprised.
I can't guarantee you victory if you're on my team but we'll come up with some cool ass music and make it hard for anyone else to walk away as champ.
My musical example is from a round about British culture hosted by my fellow judge and Fan Idol champion Square which I think is the song I've picked that best fit a round concept, Great British Mistake by the Adverts
