People here acting like they weren't going to PG-13 movies when they weren't 7 or 8 years old. Shit, I watched Batman '89 when I was like 6 and that was PG-13.

My parents just bought the Bat-89 VHS for the household, which made me want tickets for Returns and I was 8 in the theater. I died at the dude who called it "an attack against kids!" I bet to him it was the worst anti-kid campaign since Village of the Damned.

I can't remember if I saw Batman Returns in theaters or not, but if I did it would've been my first PG-13 movie in theaters at 7 years old. If not, that honor falls to Jurassic Park a year later when I was 8.
Meanwhile the movie that gave me actual nightmares as a little kid, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, was only rated PG. Somehow a dude getting his heart pulled out of his chest was considered A-OK for PG by MPAA censors.

Seeing stuff like that video really makes me appreciate my parents who were not uptight about letting us watch things like this or video games like Mortal Kombat. They were way more concerned about how I was doing at school or behaving at friend's houses, etc.

There was no PG-13 rating when Temple of Doom came out. In fact, that film and Gremlins is what led to the creation of PG-13.

By the time I was 10, I refused to see a movie unless it had titties in it.

I’m not saying all these kids have been completely coached....but I can’t think of a different way to end that sentence.
I saw it the second time, just to tell other kids how to get away from there!

When I was 8 my goddamn school let my class watch Gremlins, which was rated 15 at the time, and even today is rated 12A. At 10 I was watching stuff like RoboCop and Tango & Cash with my parents. People didn't pay attention to age ratings... most still don't.

Yeah we all came out of Terminator 2 fine. Terminator 3, that's a different story that we don't talk about. Terminator 3 raped my childhood even before Michael Bay did.

ET scared the shit outta me as a kid, so I didn’t regularly watch it until my teens. Pretty sure I went to Batman Returns in theatres, distinctly remember my parents telling me about it when it was coming soon. Had some of the McDonald’s toys too

It was the scene where Drew Barrymore finds out about ET and he goes running and screaming down the hallway that completely f***ed me up. Couldn’t watch that movie for years because of that scene EDIT: Should add, I was born in 86, so I was about 4 when I watched those movies. Loved Batman, terrified of ET

The movie having McDonald toys didn't help the controversy

I might still have the book version that was done for kids. If I find it, I'll post excerpts. There are certain scenes I'm quite interested in checking out, just to see how they were changed for kids.
As for me, my parents wouldn't let me see it when it came out, because my mom my had heard some things about it. She had no problem with me enjoying Batman, mind you, she just told me flat-out the movie wasn't appropriate for me. I finally rented it when I was sixteen and... I didn't really enjoy it, tbh. I didn't find it disturbing or anything, I just didn't really care for it. It honestly felt like they were just going for disturbing visuals over story. Like, the story was there, but it was secondary to "let's see how creepy we can make this movie look! Let's put a bunch of random makeup on Danny DeVito! Let's push Michelle Phfeiffer out a window, then have her go insane! Let's push a woman off a roof and actually have her be dead! Let's burn a guy's face off!" The creepiness factor was definitely a detriment to the movie, but because of the quality, not the scare-factor.

I loved 89 as a kid but Penguin in Returns scared me so bad. My fav Batman movies growing up were Phantasm, 89, and Batman & Robin so I don't know what that says about my taste though.

I didn't get to see Batman Returns in the theater, but we definitely rented it well before Batman Forever came out (which I did see in the theater at 12 or 13 years old). I just thought it was cool. But I also grew up with older siblings, we watched Friday the 13th movies and they'd scare me with hockey masks. And I had seen Throw Momma From the Train, so I knew who Danny Devito was and was aware he was playing the Penguin. And I had the collectible magazine that went over the film's plot.
I understand my experience isn't everyone else's.

There was also a minor controversy over The Dark Knight being too scary for kids, but I wonder why Batman vs Superman (and suicide squad for that matter) eluded controversy.
