When they were showing the lineup for the next few hours it said "NXT" on the screen in block letters. Could WWE go after them for this?

I doubt WWE can trademark NXT beyond a wrestling context.
It’s probably why they could use The Shield without catching a lawsuit from FX or Marvel.

I’m pretty sure I sent a text (or a txt as we called them back then...) or 2 in the year 1999 using NXT as an abbreviation for Next, where’s my money?

Whatever the shop vac company is for home depot uses NXT on their box logo. It wouldn't surprise me if that company came out with it first and someone in WWE saw it. But NXT isn't really that creative for the description of a show or group based on up and coming talent or next generation.
