Was the concept and execution good or bad? On the one hand it gave Nitro a "sporting event" feel, the Nitro Girls were popular enough to move merch, and generally fun to watch.
On the other hand it was not wrestling related, dances came off lame sometimes, and hasn't really been used again since.

I guess they were a good way to keep the audience entertained during commercial breaks.
...Then Russo decided to have them wrestle.

Good for keeping the live audience entertained, some of them even became good valet/manager types but yeah they should never have actually wrestled.

It was harmless entertainment in the same way real sports have cheerleaders, and if you merged in wrestling personalities, they could float in and out of other roles in the show, like Kimberly Page as the lead Nitro Girl and also DDP's valet.
But yeah, making non-wrestlers do wrestling matches out of the blue was a terrible idea.

Did lead to one of my favourite segments in 98 when the nWo interrupted the Nitro girls to bully Kimberly and DDP took the bait came out and got his arse kicked by 5 nWo guys while Kimberley was forced to watch.
The Nitro before Road Wild 98. August 3rd.

My main memories of them are Kimberly being out of sync with the rest of them and Larry Zybszko calling AC Jazz that little blue eyed goddess every single time.
There was also the time they sent them out on Thunder in Columbus to put over an upcoming Nitro Party at Duke University and wish the Blue Devils luck which got the reaction you'd expect.

It was a great idea and were always super over at the wcw shows I went to.Plus they got wcw exposure by appearing on non-wrestling shows like Regis & Katie Lee,Entertainment Tonight,Wild on E!,etc.
Pro Wrestling should never be only wrestling content you need to have variety to appeal to the masses.Nobody cared that they weren’t good dancers it was about having hot half naked women on tv and at the arena.

...Then Russo decided to have them wrestle. Definitely not a good example of his "give everyone something to do" initiative. They contributed to a cool/fun environment for a while, but as soon as they startd having to valet and wrestle, the gimmick was beyond dead and several of them bailed asap because that's.....not what they were there for. (I miss Fyre.)

Loved it.
It would look out of place in WWE but maybe AEW could do something similar.

It was a great idea when it was used right. Keeping the audience pumped and enthused is a major part of wrestling tv. And I will say they are a rare, refreshing example of all of them going on to lead perfectly full, happy lives post wrestling. Have not heard a single story of any of them getting into drugs, dealing with sexual assault, dying too young, etc. I think my most vivid memory was one of those spring break shows they did where the ring was set up on a pool-but it was an unseasonably cold spring that year, and when the Nitro Girls came out in bikinis even Schiavome and Zybysko sounded sorry for how freezing they must have been.

Were they trained dancers or just models or girl looking girls that were hired? I remember Fyre being slated for a playboy shoot that turned into just a clothed shoot like Traci Brooks. I was pretty disappointed. She was my favorite back then.

I liked them at the time, but even back then, the Nitro Girls debuting did make me wonder why WCW's Women's division suddenly vanished after Akira Hokuto vs. Madusa at GAB '97 because I didn't have internet access until later that year.
Also, I didn't know about wrestling news online until '98.

Sometimes she would have her back to the hard camera while all the other Nitro Girls were facing it. Loved it. It would look out of place in WWE but maybe AEW could do something similar. The Jacksonville Jaguars Cheerleaders have shown up on occasion.

If I remember, her correctly, many of them were complaining about only being dancers and that’s why several of them started getting put in angles

I believe most of them had been cheerleaders.
