It seems from what some have said here that there were rumblings for years but I’ve never heard them. I will say that I take what famous people say with a pinch of salt because yes people should be kinder to each other and the current celebrities may not be doing some of the horrible things that happened in decades past, they aren’t angels either.

Ellen lost me when she went so hard to bat for Kevin Hart after the stuff with the Oscars, even when he non-apologized for being a homophobe.

I've never like her and find nothing funny about her. I've gotten back " oh you don't like her because she's a lesbian".. uh no a shit person is a shit person Years ago back when her ABC sitcom got canceled she said it was because she's gay. But, listening to the fans the show went to crap after she came out. One of the reasons I remember was that the show went from a comedy to being all about gay issues and not being funny and thus the ratings went down and she was canceled. Also, for a company that was so antigay ABC even let her bitch about them on one of their news shows when they really didn't have to. Keep in mind I never watched the show but, I do remember fans saying that about the show.

In general have always found her incredibly lame. Only really ever watched her Oscar hosting, a few YouTube clips of her show, and a stand-up special. The only thing I ever thought was "Well, she's an important figurehead to the LGBT community." And Finding Nemo, but that just rubbed me the wrong way when she went all "I won't eat fish anymore!" And her "be kind" thing was just... go away.
And since one of my friends was one of the people who got one of the highlighted tweets in that thread a few months back. I have no issues with her possible downfall.

Can anyone summarize what the main allegations are against her as far as racism goes?

I watched Ellen pretty regularly back then, it was a favourite of my mum’s, and from what I remember the show went from sitcom to soapbox pretty quickly. I can understand why, first lead gay woman in a sitcom, but it definitely altered the show and it dropped in quality. I get why people lost interest

I wouldn't say ABC was explicitly homophobic at the time, but American society as a whole was still. A lot of sponsors dropped advertising after The Puppy Episode and ABC put a "viewers advised" disclaimer before each episode of Ellen the next season. Saying the reason it got cancelled was just that it wasn't funny anymore ignores the complexity of mainstream homophobia at the time.

The show wasn't funny to begin with, I don't know how much "less funny" it could have gotten.
And 'funny' is one of those words that gets weird looking when I stare at it long enough.

Regardless of what's happening now, let's not try to re-write history and pretend like her coming out wasn't the reason her show was cancelled.

So I've never liked her dancing. It reminded me of a soul train dancer doing the fusion dance with Elaine Benes.

I was actually a big fan of her sitcom (I had a super crush-I-was-too-young-to-know-was-a-crush on her annoying friend Audrey). The show did get lame (there were a couple of good episodes including one brilliant satire featuring Emma Thompson), but it was hardly the worst thing on TV. But yeah: the complaints were the show starring a gay person about a gay person's life got too focused on being gay. This... like, let's just say that a lot of homophobic people would feel uncomfortable about that.
