I know we've had this thread before, but I've been on a bit of a cover binge lately. As far as live versions, for my money, it doesn't get any better than

The Flaming Lips version of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". Takes it from being a pop/dance tune to a torch song from a Spanish novella.

Judas Priest's version of Diamonds & Rust. Personally, I think Tim Owens's version is the best. He really makes it his own from the '98 Live Meltdown album. Other great cover songs include Red Rain and Welcome To The Machine by Queensryche, and probably the best is Mad World.

I'm convinced that Metallica's version of Am I Evil is the greatest song ever recorded.

How was Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" not mentioned yet? That should have been one of the first ones.
One I am fond of is The Bangles' cover of "Hazy Shade of Winter".

I love a lot of covers here is a few I grabbed quickly. I may go find some others latter
A few of American Murder Song's songs are just covers of old murder ballads. But a recent album had a few more modern songs on it, my favourite is their cover of Jenny Was A Friend of mine
EXIT EDEN basically a group of four great female singers who did one album which consisted of heavy metal covers. So I'm just going to post what is probably the most famous song they covered (Also don't take this one song for who the main singer is, it changes depending on the song)

All That Remains do a hard rock cover of "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks, and it's amazing. The only complaint I have is that the song is tailor-made for the live verse, but they don't do it.
I also found a cover of "Pumped Up Kicks" by a band called 3TEETH thanks to Justin Whang. It's a lot slower and more sinister, and matches the tone of the lyrics more than the original.
