I really don't get why they had Baker lose. It sucks. I'm happy with either Ryo or Yuka winning overall. Im ok with it thinking Baker's probably gonna get her title run down the line, just looks like they wanna have that be someone else right now. I assume because they want to have Rosa/Baker run it back maybe with a match stipulation.

I kind of expected Baker to lose eventually (thought it would be the finals to Yuka) as it makes sense she would not be the one to face Shida. Britt's strong suit is character work, so I'm sure AEW wants to save (arguably) their biggest women's match in Shida/Baker to be built around proper feud, rather than to have it be the result of a tournament with less heat.
Still shocked she didn't make the finals though. Britt has earned some recognition for the improvements she has made over the year. Great match between her and Rose

So, as someone who feels very confident in Ryo Mizunami as the winner, I'm really curious what her trajectory is going to look like. If she wins, she'll have gone through two intimidating heels and two beloved faces. (OK, Maki's really morally ambiguous, but she's a face as far as fan reaction on the internet is concerned.) I worry that she'll descend into aimless booking after the title match, but I'm curious if they're going to play her more as a tweener with that setup.

I love Emi Sakura. I wouldn't call her first run a disappointment in that I feel like she came there and did what she intended, putting over Riho and Big Swole after getting some early dominant performances, with the intention to take 2020 off for the Japan side of her career. It just, uhh, ended up being for different reasons than anticipated. Still, the best is yet to come for her. She could easily just sit back and be happy her students Riho and Shida are doing so well, but I like that she has zero intention of slowing down or resting on her laurels.

Next week (28th/27th depending on where you live) ChocoPro's main even is Mei and Yuna Mizumori vs. Emi and Aja Kong so I think she can pick herself up by beating up her students.
I thought Emi was good during her first run. The only thing is she leaned heavy into the Queen stuff which she had been kinda using as a gag in Japan since she went to see the movie like fifty times (and before the movie barely knew about Queen apparently). I think she did so under the natural assumption that it's understandable and foreign friendly, but if she just did what she normally does in other promotions as kind of a mean taskmaster, it would have been gotten over no problem.

She did more in that half second of walking out with the crown and looking at the camera to make me understand her gimmick, then in that entire putting on a mustache and doing the Mercury thing. This time around, I think fans would really be into it. Also thanks for your Joshi insight Awamorirock. Do you do any youtube videos explaining anything?

Yeah, I think she was sort of figuring things out for a big TV audience and has been pretty gung-ho about AEW during the pandemic, so she's probably got a clearer feeling for it and will do well. Haha aww thanks, nah I don't really do any content, just always happy to talk about it (to a fault lol)

Shocked but happy with Britt losing because it makes the finals totally unpredictable; before I was convinced that the entire tournament was just an elaborate way for her to get a title shot, whereas now I could see any of the final batch taking it. I like Britt - she and Nyla put on a banger last night and she's improved a ton - but I don't think she's reliable enough in-ring to be the face of the division. She'll get there, but she's not there yet IMO.

right before the nyla /britt match (assuming britt would win) it suddenly dawned on me that they could also revist AEW's first major women's feud- riho vs nyla given the brackets but fully expected rosa/britt to be the US finals. now with nyla winning i'm actually thinking rosa falls short against riho (whether due to britt who can;t let rosa advance when she couldn;t - to continue their feud or clean). then we get riho/nyla 3 (or 4, there may have been another match i don;t recall beside the title changes).
this also busts the japan side bracket too for me since britt/yuka would be a revenge angle for yuka as well going into it. so now i'm going with ryo on that side and a ryo/nyla final (just because i can only imagine JR trying to keep riho and ryo straight on commentary) and a ryo win to give shida a fresh matchup.

Shida honestly deserves it. She put this division on her back for months in the worst of it all.
I think it's about time she dropped it to someone soon, but she definitely earned the record.

Honestly, Riho is one of the few women I could see them having beat Rosa straight-up clean, given I think they really want to establish Riho as one of the top women to newer fans, though Nyla might still beat her, since those two have a lot of history together. Either woman would probably have an easier time working with Ryo or Yuka since they've obviously got more experience with joshi, but then again, Rosa versus Nyla and Ryo or Yuka would also turn heads, too. I'm at a point in the tournament where any finals match sounds highly appealing.

Tony Khan made it fairly clear on Observer Radio that he has some interest in Zelina Vega.

The Monday YouTube show that has the US Finals with Nyla vs Riho/Thunder Rosa will have an undercard. I assume we'll get the matches in a day or two.

Cool that Britt vs Nyla was the most viewed match of this weeks Dynamite That was a very pleasant surprise. It was also down only like 3,000 in the demo from the top spot. If this tournament was meant to show that the women can be a ratings success, it's been very successful.

Its almost like the fans are speaking where it matters most: the bottom line (or ratings to be technically correct lol)

You could argue that they've put on some of the best women's TV matches in the country this year with the past three weeks. We've gone from weekly short matches that aren't very good to show stealers that leave you wanting more. That's a big shift. There's more work to do but I'm glad this division is becoming a bright spot for the company that people are actively tuning in to see.
