As someone who is a L O N G time AVGN fan, like from the very beginning...I don't really like James & Mike Mondays all that much. I just...don't really like Mike Matei at all. I'm not even really sure why. I mean the comics he drew and stuff are certainly a part of it but I didn't like him before any of that surfaced. Who knows? Life is a mystery.

Despite the relative shortness of this vid, the next vid would go over 30 minutes again so today it is one video again.
This time, it is Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube: -For the first time, this is a competition between James & Mike with the first one to get three wins in a row getting to choose the game for next week. I think this was very rare (not so much the competition thing, but getting to announce the game for next week in advance) so it is definitely a deviation from the norm.
-While Mike uses different characters, James sticks with Mr. Game & Watch because back when this game was new, James trained to become quite good at using this character (who I guess was looked at as the black sheep of that game's line-up). We also learn that Mike's favorite character to use is Pikachu.
-Nothing much I can say about this game though I loved the original game for Nintendo 64 a lot when it came out (similar to how James & Mike reminisce about it here).
-Love James & Mike's reaction to Wobbuffet (mostly because they have no idea what to make of him, being not very knowledgable in Pokemon).
-Another entertaining episode mostly because fighting games where the players play for actual stakes are more intriguing to watch.

One video again today.
This time, we hit Sonic The Hedgehog...otherwise known as Sonic '06 for the XBox 360: -While we had at least one game in Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde that featured previously on a Nerd episode, this time we get a game that would get a Nerd episode dedicated to it in the future.
-Definitely a game that looks good but one can see gradually how James & Mike get more and more annoyed with various things (Sonic being in a fantasy setting populated by mostly humans, the long, long, loooooooong loading times, the talking NPCs that seem to recite the whole speech from The Great Dictator while only saying "Welcome!", the game camera that seems to operate on real camera laws as well as not giving you enough time to read the instructions before having to actually use them).
-Loved most their reactions to having the game start over again after they lost all their lives (going back to the very first cutscene) and whenever Sonic or Tails fall into what seems the endless void of the game code or something.
-Overall, it was a good episode but I felt that they were kinda holding back or something. I like it more when they have fun and laugh about a bad game rather than getting frustrated with it.

After a while, it is time for another 2-for-1 special!
First up, Godzilla: Unleashed for the Sony Playstation 2: -Never played that game but holy s**t, are those rounds really five minutes long? I was starting to wonder why they played so long with just one pairing before seeing the clock on there. I dunno whether I could enjoy that in a fighting game, I prefer those to be more fast-paced and be done in a shorter amount of time. Neat though that you can destroy the buildings and stuff in the battlefield.
-The game is mostly a background for James & Mike to voice their excitement for the then upcoming new American Godzilla movie in 2014 and their expectations for it (that it is not like the 1998 Godzilla or the Michael Bay Transformers movies). Also gives them a bit of background to talk about their love for the Godzilla series and reminiscing about various parts of it.
-At one point, it turns into a discussion on Full House (due to them hoping to find the Full House house in the San Francisco stage) and them mentioning whether there will ever be a reboot of Full House. So, I guess we have to thank them for Fuller House? I kinda like the image of Michelle looking at Godzilla and pals fighting in front of their house.
-Also love in the end, brought about by James's displeasure that (at that point at least) Family Matters was not released completely yet on DVD, it turns into a discussion on what is or could be released on DVD and Blu-Ray. They mention the Batman 1960s show that hadn't been released on DVD by that point (giving us a sweet picture of James & Mike having dressed up as 1960s Batman and The Riddler for that year's Halloween) and what could be released on DVD and Blu-Ray like the Weather Channel or the Sports Preview Channel collections (whenever James wants to rewatch a weather report on Hurricane Bob from 1985 or something). They also mention that probably Netflix is the future for longer shows like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood or Sesame Street which have a lot of episodes making it virtually impossible to release them on DVD.
-All in all, while not focusing too much on the game, their discussion about Godzilla and DVDs was interesting to listen to so it is still a good episode. And yeah, a Godzilla vs. Gamera movie would be awesome!
Second vid, Karate Champ for the NES: -I wouldn't disagree with both of them. This really does look like the worst fighting game ever made.
-Love how they make fun of the horrible hit detection, how the characters look in certain poses and how they can (almost) never hit anything in those bonus rounds.
-Also like how they reveal some blatant false advertising on the back of the box. As Mike eloquently put it: The bull is bull.
-Still a funny decent vid, but none of their best.

After a while, another 3-for-1 sale!
First up, The Flowers Of Robert Mapplethorpe for the Philips CD-i: -It appears I was mistaken. I seemed to remember that this was the shortest episode of J&MM being under four minutes long, but it is actually one second longer than the Taboo one. So, apparently the Taboo: The Sixth Sense episode is the shortest J&MM episode.
-Not much of a game and more of a CD-ROM interactive disc where you can watch pictures of flowers photographed by Robert Mapplethorpe and have a curator tell you something about this fellow. Not very entertaining for someone who is not very interested in this subject matter.
-James and Mike don't seem to know him but going by the size of his wikipedia page, Robert Mapplethorpe appears to have been a well-known photographer in the art scene. Also, he seems to also have photographed a wide variety of subjects besides flowers like male and female nudes and the gay BDSM subculture in New York of the late 1960s and early 1970s (wonder how James & Mike would have reacted to a CD with that subject matter).
-Given the sparse content on the disc, there is not much for them to say though I love during the curator part the juxtaposition of James smiling at the stuff unfolding before him while Mike appears to fall asleep. Also love their interpretation of what various flowers look like to them. Furthermore, using a mouse cursor with the CD-i controller sucks.
-A short video but it was cute.
Next, it's Bio Force Ape for the NES: -Now here we have not a homebrew or hack but rather an unreleased NES game (since it had screenshots and all in Nintendo Power) that somebody found and put on an NES cartridge (similar to Drac's Night Out, Star Trek V and others).
-It looks like an interesting game due to his high speed (compared by James & Mike to Sega's blast processing) and good graphics but James & Mike quickly get annoyed with the confusing map (I agree, why couldn't the whole map be displayed at once instead of just showing one quarter of the map at a time) and not knowing where to go.
-Nothing that noteworthy otherwise, just a decent episode.
Finally for today, we have Rocky for the Sony Playstation 2: -OK, here I thought the Dragonball games were ridiculous for putting hundreds of different Goku versions out there, but this game...I mean, is there any difference besides trunks whether you select the Rocky from I, II, III, IV or V or the Apollo Creed from I, II, III or IV?
-Yeah, who doesn't remember Big Yank Ball from the Rocky movies (Mike's favorite character in that game).
-Mickey really does seem to be the worst playable character in the game given he goes down after just one KO (or were the game makers going for realism?).
-A rather risqué line from James in this one: "C'mon, my wife goes down faster than this!"
-Otherwise, a short and funnier vid compared to the Flowers one above.

This time (and the next days as it looks like from the videos following), another one-video day! Coming up, Metal Slug for the Neo-Geo CD: -I am actually surprised that the CDs for the Neo-Geo CD are regular-sized CDs and not CDs the size of LPs. -This actually looks like a really fun game. Similar to Contra but with more cartoony and visually pleasing graphics. James & Mike certainly seem to have a lot of fun with it. -Loved the small discussion they had about fad words (or whatever you may call them): how pwn seems to have almost disappeared by the time of this video (January 2014) while lol is still around or words like awesome, rad, phat etc. still seem to be used pretty regularly. -They just seem to have no luck with the Neo-Geo consoles in this series. First, the previous Neo-Geo game had sound problems. Then this time, the system just up and quits on them (otherwise, I could see that this could have been another playthrough by them). -They also hint (and actually announce) the game for the next episode. Something they didn't do that often. -Another quick and entertaining video by them.

From what I remember, just some different stat things that you have to look closely at to tell (for example, Apollo II is slower but stronger than Apollo I).

After playing through Super C recently, James & Mike again delve into that world by playing Contra for the NES: -While they do attempt a playthrough like they did with Super C, unlike last time they edited the video a bit. It doesn't lose much but the edits are noticeable. -We learn that the main reason why they did Super C first was because it is James's favorite game of the two Contras for NES and also because it is a bit easier with two players compared to the original one. -Both of them still loving the spread weapon and avoiding any other weapon while they have it. -Quote of the video: "I'll be more aggressive when I'm on top." -Also the debut of Mike's favorite act of frustration: hitting the sofa repeatedly. -Not gonna spoil whether they will finish the game or not, it is for you to say. -Not an episode high on the laughs, but I enjoyed them trying to tackle a game together and really acting coordinated for the most part like a well-oiled machine. A good 'un.

A trip to the future when James & Mike play RoboCop Versus The Terminator for the SNES: -A new addition during picture-in-picture where the bottom right corner now displays a sort-of James & Mike Mondays logo with James and Mike's heads in 8-bit art. I couldn't recall that so I think that must not have lasted very long.
-Their reason for playing this game? To celebrate the new RoboCop coming into theatres (back in Feb. 2014), giving them also some time to reminisce about that particular movie franchise (the first one was very good and the others were not too bad but could not compare to the original). Oh, and also some comments about Dumb & Dumberer that was also released around the same time.
-I liked their discussion about "Vs." movies in general. They are a cool concept but they hate it when they end in a tie with nobody winning. I find the idea from them neat where the studios should shoot different endings and release one half with one ending to theatres while releasing the other half with the other ending in theatres. Though I could imagine it would cause chaos online for months afterwards.
-As far as a potential RoboCop vs. Terminator fight is concerned, they think that the Terminator would win since he seems to take a whole lot of punishment more compared to RoboCop (although in this game, when they finally meet the first Terminator, they wipe the floor with him).
-As for the game they enjoy it immensely though they acquiesce that it gets real hard down the line but in a way kinda where you get frustrated but still keep want to play.
-Liked the various discussions they had in this one, so a good episode IMHO.

Let's go visit a theme park with James & Mike by playing Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure for the Nintendo Gamecube: -Another new feature on James & Mike Mondays with a multi-part video focusing on one game only. We had the multi-part videos previously for the Atari 2600 but those were a plethora of different games. This time, they only focus on this one game for two videos.
-Loved hearing about James & Mike's visits to various Universal Studios in the US (especially how James's friend did a rude but funny thing at an E.T. ride there).
-I definitely have the same feelings James & Mike have when watching this game: confusion on what exactly you are supposed to do, anger at the shitty camera work and how Woody Woodpecker doesn't let you enter any attractions because there are lines there, further confusion about why the player character has to pick up garbage etc.. That one is certainly among the most baffling games I have ever seen because I can imagine most players unlike James & Mike just giving up because the game just doesn't look very fun to play.
-I believe that this is the debut of James just naming his player character Ass or a variation thereof for this series.
-Also love how James completely cracks up after Mike says following watching that 10-second Waterworld show: "Well, at least you didn't have to stand in lines." Besides that, I really like how they mock this game further by declaring it a "great" advertisement for Universal Studios where you have to pick up garbage, do not get to enter any lines to go into an attraction etc. among other hilarious snarky remarks. I swear that they looked ready to blow a gasket when Woody says his usual denial line before changing his dialogue so that you can enter (definitely one of the worst teasers they could have thought of).
-This marks perhaps the first time in those vids that they take a look at the instruction manual, too.
-The E.T. and Jaws game look interesting but according to James & Mike are tough to play due to bad controls. Gotta like that Jaws Game Over screen where the child tries to get as high as possible before the ship eventually sinks.
-For me, the first part is already very funny and I seem to remember that this was really the first classic James & Mike episode featuring a bad game where they really hit loose with the snark and mocking the game relentlessly. Let's hope that they keep it up for Part 2!

Continuing with the 2nd part of playing Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure for the Nintendo Gamecube: -After figuring out that you can pick up and throw away trash to get points to exchange for hats that you get from Woody Woodpecker (which they cannot get over how ridiculous of an idea it is as far as advertising for Universal Studios it is), they want to check out two more attractions.
-First up, the Back To The Future attraction which looks like a decent game but is still subject to terrible controls. I am surprised at their surprise of there being two DeLoreans since didn't the real-life attraction explain why Biff was now in possession of a second DeLorean? Still, it is sweet to listen to them figuring out from the movies how many DeLoreans might exist.
-The other attraction is the Jurassic Park one which they admit is decent. Not the best or really good but playable compared to the other attractions. Here I loved their wish that new Jurassic Park movies take place at the original Jurassic Park (especially James wants to see the gate again).
-Also liked in this vid their frustration with the text dialogues and the random placement of which answer is highlighted first, leading to several moments where Mike selected the answer he didn't want to select.
-Overall, not as much fun as the previous one (where they were mostly baffled in figuring out the game which was fun to watch) but still good enough to make this two-parter the first real classic of James & Mike Mondays for me.

What could possibly go wrong when James & Mike play Bubsy In Fractured Furry Tales for the Atari Jaguar: -Having a look at the release history, this one was released after the SNES and Genesis games but before Bubsy's swan song with the 3D game for the Sony Playstation. -We do learn that both James & Mike love Garfield and Heathcliff though they would say that "Heathcliff is to Garfield what the Gobots are to Transformers". -It does look like a beautiful game...for SNES and Genesis but wasn't the Atari Jaguar supposed to be able to do more than this? Though I guess we should be glad that they didn't try out a Bubsy 3D game for this console. -Both of them don't like Bubsy because he is pretty generic and makes these lame cat puns. They also make fun of his flying move where they think that the programmers may have had him confused with a squirrel or something. -It doesn't play too bad but both of them get pretty frustrated with the fact that Bubsy only has one hit to die and seemingly even barely touching an enemy can kill you as well as the game being a bit confusing to figure out. At one point it gets so frustrating that even James has to slap his knee! -Also love to hear that they like stuff like Grimm's Fairy Tales because of the darkness in the original stories. -All in all, a decent episode for James & Mike. Not bad but not high level either.

James & Mike now tackle an unreleased game, namely Super Mario's Wacky Worlds for the Philips CD-i: -According to them, Philips had a licence for one more Nintendo game (following the three Zelda games and the Hotel Mario game) which was supposed to be Super Mario World 2 (or at least something similar to it) before the sales of the CD-i crumbled so much that they gave up on this project. I don't know where James & Mike got this unreleased version for it but as seen in the video, it is not worth any price.
-Now, the game looks very interesting with using an updated Super Mario World engine and lots of colorful graphics as well as using several real-life setting with the enemies looking accordingly (Koopas in Inuit clothing for the ice levels, Koopas in Greek togas for the Greece levels, Koopas in Dracula outfits for the Haunted levels). It certainly could have been a pretty enjoyable game...but not in this unreleased, unfinished format where you get stuck repeatedly, cannot finish any level and have to reset the console every time you get stuck.
-Thus, in this vid, Mike becomes the Reset Bitch while James becomes the Stick Boy (hopefully Mike's knees didn't suffer too much).
-I agree that one of the second ice levels is the best level in the game because you can play it until the end, get to defeat several enemies and even get to overcome a glitch, too!
-For those with photosensitive issues, there is one part at around the 12:00-14:00 minute mark where there is an almost stroboscope-like glitch present that stays on there for a long time which may be uncomfortable (even James has to look away because it is hurting his eyes so bad).
-Liked that little anecdote about James trying out skiing once (it didn't end very good).
-Overall, it is decent due to being an interesting game to look at but James and Mike do not fill the vid with quality material and it gets a bit boring through the course of it. They have done better episodes.

Now back to a game that actually functions (well, sort of) with Dennis The Menace for the SNES: -Interesting, I never knew that there was a 1950s live-action Dennis The Menace show. Always thought that there was just the cartoon show from the 1980s (?) and the live-action movies in the 1990s. -I believe this is the first time that James & Mike cannot clear the first level of a game. And I cannot blame them since when I rented the game when it came out, I could not figure out how to pass the first level either (and I actually looked into the instruction manual that time). I actually agree with Mike here that it should not be so hard to figure out what to do without having to look at a walkthrough online. -After hints in the previous videos, I have learned now for sure: James gets really frustrated at game stuff that should be reachable but one still cannot get despite many tries (like not being able to jump on a platform that looks like it can be reaches or a big highlighted coin that you cannot grab). -Mike really can do an annoying cat meow very well. -I dunno if they are missing something but if you can only reach the higher platforms by letting yourself intentionally get hit, then that is really among the stupidest things ever in a game. -Now that's a good quiz: Name two series that have a Mr. Wilson as a neighbor in it. -Yep, that's a good summary: f**k Dennis The Menace and f**k Mr. Wilson. -This one was a bit more entertaining than the last one due to it being at least a working game but the frustration at not being able to clear the first level mostly seeped through and there were not many funny interactions. It still was decent but only that.

Hitting some sick beats now with those cool cats James & Mike now playin' ToeJam & Earl for the Sega Genesis: -Up to that point, the longest James & Mike video going a bit past the 40-minute-mark. Always have a fond memory for this video since I watched it while on holiday with my uncle on some German islands in the North Sea. I was unsure whether James & Mike could hold my attention for that long a vid but they succeeded. -As James states at the beginning, this is among his favorite Sega Genesis games although he does admit that there are some frustrating elements there is to with which I would agree despite never having played that game until now. The fact that there are bad items that can hurt you (including a randomizer that rearranges all your items) would make this a very annoying game but I can see that it is a hilarious looking game with fun humor (especially the various dialogues by ToeJam and Earl as well as the "ranks" you earn along the way and an interesting concept with falling down to previous levels when you fall off the side of a level. -It is a try by them to actually play through the game but because of a bad start they only manage to get up to level 22 (at least James did since Mike died several levels before that). It is at least good that they don't try to actually spend several hours of video footage to get through a game when they don't feel like it. -They probably were not as scared of the boogeyman as children than they were of the boogeyman in the game in this video. -To be fair to James, "This is tense" is so generic a sentence that you would not immediately associate it with "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace". -The most tense part of the video is when they try to go the bonus stage and James almost gets them killed by going to wrong lower part of the level. -While the video did not have many hilarious conversations or anecdotes, I like it mostly due to the interesting game they play and following them along on their quest to finish it albeit unsuccessfully.

After a while, we are in for another 2-for-1 special!
First up, let's get into the delivering business with James & Mike and Paperboy for the Nintendo 64: -They bring up the NES game several times as well as there being no follow-up after this N64 game but I wonder why they didn't bring up that there was a SNES Paperboy as well.
-Cannot tell since I never played this game but although it looks like fun, apparently it has control issues that makes it not as fun as it could be. Not to mention the N64-typical ugly polygon graphics (especially Paperboy himself looks a bit possessed).
-Interesting idea with there being boss battles in this leading to some wacky imagery (as pointed out by James).
-Poor kid on a tricycle. Getting hit in the head by a coconut...I mean newspaper.
-Another decent episode for the game being a bit interesting but nothing truly spectacular.
Next up, another console-oriented vid with James & Mike having a look at one of the most obscure consoles ever, the Action Max: -I never thought I would see anything weirder than learning that some Commodore 64 games used cassette tapes to play games but here we have a console from 1987 that uses VHS tapes. As they mention, there is no slot in the console itself where you can input the VHS, meaning you need to have a VHS player in connection with the console to play this (console is mainly for keeping score).
-Four games played by James and Mike (only missing one released and one unreleased game of the original catalogue): The Rescue Of Pops Ghostly, Ambush, a fighter jet game and finally a submarine game.
-Personally, while it looks like a novel idea at first, I think the weakness is that being on a VHS tape, it doesn't matter whether you actually shoot at the screen or not, the end result will be the same. And you are not even guaranteed an ending because when I look at the Pops Ghostly "game", it just ends without any resolution. That would definitely turn me off this system.
-Another room they are sitting in this time which I cannot pinpoint (Mike's room? A different room in James's house?). Though going by James asking Mike about the weird poster in the background, I would assume it is a room in Mike's house. They did this probably because they needed an old circuit TV instead of a modern one because otherwise it would not have worked.
-Gotta love Mike starting the Full House theme at one point and us learning about how for James sometimes the Full House and Family Matters theme song start to blend in together. Also love them referencing the Twilight Zone at one point.
-Quote of the video by Mike: "The ghost dimension, the ghost zone...Now that looks like a ghost's asshole. And that one looks like a ghost fart."
-Definitely agree that the mannequins in the Ambush game look creepier than the ghosts in Pops Ghostly.
-For the first time at the end, we get thumbnail links to other James & Mike videos (though I think they mixed up the Super C and Contra videos).
-All in all, a more entertaining video mostly because of the interesting piece of video game history we look at.

Continuing with another 2-for-1 post.
First up, James & Mike party with a party game not in real life but as a video game with Anticipation for the NES: -Another appearance by Bootsy in this one though like the Punch-Out I am not sure what he is even doing here since it appears to be only James & Mike playing.
-The game is essentially a video game version of Pictionary, nothing more, nothing less. I liked hearing about James & Mike playing this game ad nauseum while in college.
-Darn, that game really has a lot of weapons in it. Was the developer showing his secret weapon stash in there or something?
-Highlight of the video is definitely how they go from a drawing of a bat to talking about Chinese markets selling the...sexual reproductive organs of female ducks as delicacies (especially James appears to be broken by that Mike fact).
-Overall, a short fun video although the game is pretty basic and I would rather play real Pictionary than a video game of it.
Now to get all the frustration from that game out by playing a fighting game, namely James & Mike hitting Clayfighter on the SNES: -This is a game I really loved renting as a child because the characters looked so silly, it had colorful graphics and it appeared to be a lot more interesting than the other fighting games with human characters in it. Definitely played this one a lot. Though I also tried out Clayfighter 2: Judgment Clay and Clayfighter 63 1/3 for the Nintendo 64, those were never as fun as this one.
-Gotta agree with both of them here. The Blob is the best character because of the various things he transforms into.
-They talk a bit about gaming requests they get, among them Abobo's Big Adventure (which they did) and Goof Troop (which they haven't done yet). Though after seeing this Clayfighter vid, I would have a new request for them: the other Interplay claymation game for SNES, Claymates.
-Now what makes this video entertaining is just the many off-topic topics James & Mike go through, one facet on why I love this series so much: Going from gaming requests to their favorite Goofy cartoons to Mike's video one time about video games starring Donald Duck (both can do a pretty good Donald impression) to general thoughts about Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat as well as everyone's favorite topic: what is the correct pronunciation of Ryu's name? Just a lot packed in here and I just love listening to them.
-Because of that, a very good video featuring a fun game and funny thoughts from James & Mike.
