I'm currently watching all Undertaker's PPV matches. Currently in Taker vs Vader and JR made a comment that Vader wasn't able to score a pinfall because he didn't hook Taker's leg. Is there a kayfabe reason why hooking a leg would make it harder to get a shoulder up?

It’s the principal of pulling the opponents body weight onto their shoulders too plus a kick out is all about kicking so if you hook the leg they won’t be able to kick as well. However Undertaker usually could only pin an opponent when he didn’t hook the leg. Go figure.

The legs are generally the strongest part of the body.

The idea is that it should be an amateur wrestling style cradle, the problem is whenever people even hook the leg they do it in the laziest way possible rendering it useless either way

one of my biggest pet peeves in wrestling is how often someone will hook the leg, but put ZERO weight on their opponent's shoulders.

I do remember a story years back when RVD beat AJ for the TNA title and AJ was reportedly upset that RVD didn't hook his leg during the final pinfall and that it made AJ look like a chump.

I think that whole thing with Taker doing his signature pin after a Tombstone and not hooking the leg is that he beat the shit out of them so hard that there's literally no chance of them kicking out anyway.

One of the most common ways to avoid getting pinned is bridging with your feet on the mat. If you hook the leg its really difficult to bridge

Right, it was putting over the tombstone. The pin was simply academic.

Why hook the leg? Because Gorilla Monsoon said to always hook the leg. You don't need any more reason then that.

You're just looking to get one shoulder up. So you'd bridge and then attempt to get to your side. There is actually a basic wrestling drill where you bridge then use your left hand to touch the mat to the right of your head, then do the same with your right hand to touch the mat to the left of your head just to get used to escaping.

There's no advantage to booking the leg.
Its just one of those things that's aesthetically pleasing.
