"I think pro wrestling can just be one-on-one, hold-for-hold wrestling or it can be storytelling like any other form of television and I think that when you start to look at it too critically, especially stuff like that… I dunno, to me it reeks of 2020 trying to pick everything apart. If you like the Lake of Reincarnation in AEW but you hate the eye-for-an-eye match… you know what I mean? Then where are we really at here?”/ Right now, Orton is showing those two things are not exclusively separate. I’m sorry, but I thought this was a bad stip from jump. Not only was the angle just downbeat with Rey getting injured, fighting for his revenge and finally losing, no less, but it was also super morbid. Who’s looking forward to seeing a gross, dangling eye ball from someone’s socket on a fun wrestling show? Uh, me?

This falls apart because a lot of the people who hated the eye-for-an-eye stuff loved it when WWE went crazy with the other stuff like the Boneyard match or Firefly Fun House. Turning it into an Us vs. Them argument citing the Lake of Reincarnation is also dumb because that was also in WWE. It's tied to Matt Hardy, not AEW.

To be fair, I equally dislike the lake of reincarnation stuff just as much as I dislike the eye for an eye match concept.

To me the whole problem boils down to "WWE didn't deliver, again". It's one of the larger issues with the WWE in general. The amount of times they bait-and-switch or just flat out lie is way too much.
When you heavily advertise an Eye vs and Eye match and don't follow thru... that's a you problem. If you couldn't pull it off, it's your damn fault for advertising it. Nobody forced you guys to make that match. It's right up there with ending a no DQ match with a DQ or promising a "big return" and it's Alex Riley.

Was there anyone out there besides me who was just a teensy bit glad it was lame? While a little blood is alright once in a while I wasn't ready to see someone actually pull someone else's eye out. Yes, I know no one was really going to lose an eye but we really didn't know how they were going to pull it off. The rumors before hand mentioned cgi and with what they have been doing with cinematic matches lately who really knew before hand what they were going to do. Also was anyone else nervous when they kept picking up sharp objects and doing moves while holding them?

This is such a stupid argument. Matt Hardy's stuff embraces its inherent absurdity and is very tongue-in-cheek; the eye-for-an-eye angle was played completely straight. We're not expected to treat Matt getting nearly drowned and turning into Version 1 as anything other than a ridiculous comedy spot, while Rey holding a ping-pong ball to his face and wailing had the announcers doing their finest Owen voices. Once again Seth Rollins proves himself to be a thin-skinned moron. Also, the Lake of Reincarnation was silly and unrealistic in like a fantastical kind of way. Even putting aside the booking, that's in a completely different world from WWE emulating the 1993 Cynthia Rothrock movie Undefeatable. Thanks, now I want to find and watch UNDEFEATABLE.

I mean, most of what he said is fairly reasonable and inoffensive company guy taking the heat kind of stuff. That last part, though? Eesh. Comparing matches that have nothing at all in common and going all "How come he don't want me man?!".

Every interview he cant help but have some part of it being his foot in his mouth.
Loves reading about the process of the match itself and what he did to prepare. But man trying to justify it like that and pull a whataboutism with aew is just bad.

"At the end of the day, was it ideal? No. Did it catch people's attention? Sure. It ended up on TMZ" ................ ................ ................ ...................................................this literally applies to Chris Benoit too.

The thing we also have to remember is the difference between Eye for an Eye and something like the Stadium Stampede is that AEW did enough to set up the fact something like that can happen with street fights and unsanctioned matches with various comedy spots within them and such. With something like Eye for an Eye...when has WWE ever set up it’ll allow sanctioned matches where people lose a body part? Careers? Sure. Hair? Absolutely. Eyes? Like people have tried to take that stuff or blind people but...there’s never been a precedence for the company to allow that. So you’re just doing something for the sake of doing it and one that is f***ing crazy to allow. Not body parts but they did sanction the Inferno matches. There was also Kane agreeing that if he didn’t win the title, he would set himself on fire.

There was also Kane agreeing that if he didn’t win the title, he would set himself on fire. Sure but with those, there are literal firemen nearby for the moment someone is burned (that’s also for the safety of those in the audience in case something goes wrong but keeping kayfabe here). Like, an inferno match doesn’t end when the opponent is burnt entirely to a crisp.

He really loves saying "at the end of the day" doesn't he? He's like me in real life. Just throw in a few "what I mean is" and I could be like him, only 80% less douchey.

That was NOT a "Loser Gets Dumped With Dog Food" match. It was a "Loser EATS Dog Food" match. Point is, if you don't wanna do the stipulation, don't set it up.

The match was good, the ending was so lame I lowered my rating for not just the match but the entire show since it was a heavily promoted part of ER.
