Also, like you said, what's the actual point of it, in kayfabe? Are there any accolades to be won? Is there a sort of ranking? A winner? Many winners? Does it mean anything for your position in the rest of the WWE? Is it a brand? Is it sanctioned? Is Vince even supposed to know it exists, or is Shane going rogue? What is it?! We need to put these question into the OP and add the answers as they come to see if there truly is a point to this whole thing.

I have my doubts that they can or will be answered, but I really would like to know! Maybe they really will explain more next week, I don't know that I'll be watching, but I'll probably be here waiting to see if it comes up. It'd be great if this were a sign of interesting things to come, so hopefully they do give it some context and purpose, and who knows? Perhaps it could help make RAW kind of interesting again.

That's what I'm interested in finding out. Are these guys just blowing off some steam and fighting each other for fun? Is there going to be a belt? Are we supposed to like Shane now? Thinking about similar questions myself. They didn't really seem interested in giving any context, which seems pretty important.
I thought the "WWE Cinematic Universe Match" type styling was interesting, given I liked the WrestleMania cinematic matches and thought they could do more with it down the line. I like that they tried something new, I liked that it involved Shane in a way that was easy going and casual like Shane has always felt like he should be, instead of randomly being inserted into matches or being "basically Vince the Boss Jr.", I liked that it was a different take on combat sports but in the WWE style. A lot of potential good stuff in it, if it's handled well. But right out of the gate they made it confusing, random, unclear as to its purpose or future, and then bopped it on the head with Hurt Business showing up and wiping everything out, with Shane just sort of... walking away like it didn't matter, even though it's his club? I've been thinking about it and it COULD be an interesting concept if done right. In the debut segment I would've had Shane put over what's going to separate it from the rest of Raw as far as the rules go, announce the plan for the coming weeks (a tournament for a new championship or something like that), and make an open invitation to anyone in the company who's frustrated with their position to join, like Suge Knight going "Come to Death Row!" Then he'd put over what we see tonight as just a sneak peek.

Yeah, he did say there are no rules, which is fine given it's an underground fight club, but that only really covers the specific area of what you're allowed to do there, not what it actually is. So I agree, something like what you suggested ("if you're unhappy with your spot, feel like you're not getting enough action, want to vent your frustrations and show what you're made of") would've been a very useful thing to have said, regarding what Underground is actually for.
It'd still work now too, like Ziggler was there (for... some reason...?), could claim he's sick of where he's at on the main roster so he wanted to vent his anger with a hardcore no-rules fight and show he's got the balls to shoot.

This was immediately mocked online, it's going to go the way of "Gritty 3rd Hour of RAW". I honestly can't think of the last angle WWE did that was this universally panned. When they had two Rowans. One for the plug, and one for the load.

When disgraced independent promotion Chikara did this EXACT SAME THING a year ago, the way they made it exciting was they actually made it underground. It happened in the middle of the night. They had jobber dudes on youtube channels talking about it, and finally doing a big expose where they sneaked a camera in like guerrilla journalists. It felt different and dangerous. The WWE just has a McMahon show up and say "this is a thing we're doing now." Oh, those guys in Chikara who were part of the Crucible feud have noticed and many are really pissed as it seems like something that felt very personal to them.

I wonder what the point is. Is it going to make people watch? Will it lead to a big ppv? Is anyone actually going to get over from it? I think the answer to all of these is no Butterbeans return and Hall of Fame induction in 2021

I thought about actually watching this just to see how bad it's gonna be, but then I remembered I thought the exact same thing about the stupid f***ing eye match and that disappointed me as well, so I'm not going to.

I honestly dont see this going anywhere, and I don't even see the match formats even going longer. Just seems like a more convoluted way ot doing squashes with guys who already haven't mattered or have no bearing This reminds me of the CHIKARA Crucible angle too much, and what a CHIKARA storyline to take since it was the last angle they did before the company shut down... Glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought "Crucible" when I first saw this.

And considering they were in negotiations to put up CHIKARA content onto the WWE Network, likely the Crucible stuff, or even be an affiliate for the longest time, I can understand why you’d be a tad pissed.

You know what makes something seem really edgy, authentic, underground?
Having it run by the boss's 50 year old son who's well established as on screen management.

I thought it was a useful look into the type of show Shane would want to run. Long live Steph and HHH...

I really think this could have been a cool concept but it was just typically overly sanitised. The fight club stuff is a decent idea but the stupid corny music (that the women weren't even dancing in time with) and the same old camera work as usual really stopped it from being as good as it could be. Just make it dangerous. No cheesy music. Only one or two cameras at the most cos it's so intimidating no civilians want to be in there. I'm not saying it has to be an actual fight club blood bath but at least try and make it kinda gritty.

The WWE just has a McMahon show up and say "this is a thing we're doing now." If you take away all the shiny cameras, you really wouldn't know WWE is prime time cable/network television for just how limp and undercooked it is. I remember growing up watching tons of low budget scifi/genre shows that went to all these crazy lengths of ingenuity to stretch their meager production budget and try to make up for some of its technical deficiencies and cheap looking effects with visual style and doing something interesting. WWE has all the money in the world and spends it on hasty camera cuts and garbled nonsense.
