Suppose Stan lane doesn’t replace Dennis condrey who would you have picked? I’ll say brad Armstrong, had in ring talent and I think would have thrived with Cornette cutting the promos

Not very original since it was Cornette's choice but I'd have gone with Tom Prichard although I'd get him to tone down the Piper mannerisms.
Brad Armstrong would have worked if the timing was different, when Condrey bolted he was getting world title matches with Flair in some of the big markets (Atlanta, Philidelphia and California) so you couldn't really do the "he's getting no opportunities and the Armstrong name is holding him back" deal to explain a turn like you could later.
Before the auto accident I think John Tatum would have been a great fit.

A replacement for Stan Lane?
Steve Keirn. The other half of The Fabulous Ones.
Eddie Gilbert. Though I think he and Cornette would eventually be like oil & water.
Matt Borne. But only if he could keep his demons in check.

Only thing is, since Cornette did almost all the talking for the team, Gilbert would get lost in the shuffle. (though they did let Stan talk a lot when he joined) Also this may be OCD of me, but since Eddie wore long tights, it would go against the usual Bobby = long tights, partner = short pattern. And of course we did have Bobby and Steve in 1994...long after it meaning something.

Corny said it was supposed to be Tim Horner becoming Terrific Tim, I can’t remember the exact story but Stan Lane ended up getting the spot. (Luckily for everybody not named Tim Horner)

I've never heard that name mentioned and Cornette hates Tim Horner because of things that happened in smw.

Id love to know exactly why Dennis condrey left the first time. Cornette has told the story of them being dropped off at home by Dennis and he said he'd see them at the airport the next morning they didn't see him for over a year until the original midnight angle. It does show the respect Jim has for Dennis though because he said he and bobby Eaton found out years after the fact and to this day he's been vague at best as to what happened only saying that Dennis went to Denver.

I'm having trouble visualizing Brad Armstrong with Bobby Eaton.
I'm going to throw out Terry Taylor. He was such an underrated talent that always struggled to find his footing. If I could rewind history, I'd make sure Taylor got something solid so Red Rooster isn't the thing he's most remembered for.

And I'm going to assume that we'd all agree that if bobby eaton had left instead of Dennis condrey it would have been a much bigger blow to the team ?

Terry Taylor would be my pick as well. Good looking dude like Lane but also not really good at all on the mic so Cornette could carry the load there. I think he was Terrific Terry Taylor in his meh 1992 WWF run so he could have been Terrific Terry in the Midnight Express too. This also keeps him from ever being the Red Rooster.

I'd say the Midnights would have survived a long time without Bobby but wouldnt have had the same fan support later on. Especially if the Original Midnights feud happens. Condrey and Lane as a team is an interesting thought.

Lane was the guy that the Midnights needed.
Wrestling was moving away from hairy pot bellied guys to handsome youthful-looking guys with nice bodies and Lane gave them the image update they needed to remain relevant going into the 90's instead of looking like relics of the territories era.
No disrespect to Dennis because he was great in his time.

Kinda off-topic, but does anybody know if there's any footage out there of the original Condrey/Rose/Norville Austin version of the Midnight Express from Southeast? I've looked for it and never been able to find any.
