Instead of Mean Gene, you have one of the biggest singing stars in the world in the building, why not use her?

It could be one of two things.
One, they may not have wanted to double dip with her.
Or, two, they may have wanted to pay her appearance fee, which wasn't going to be the same thing as her singing fee.
When Michael Jackson was on The Simpsons, he said that they paid him enough to be on the show, not to sing, and had an approved impersonator to record "Ben" for them. There was the strong suspicion it was actually him singing it and doing them a favor without screwing with his asking fee, since he pretty much just sent them the audio for that, but with him dead, I guess that secret died with him.

I would guess that they thought putting her out in the front of the crowd and cameras at the beginning of the show would take the shine off her appearance later with Wendi Richter, which was one of the key things the show had been sold on.

Two things. Apparently the scheduled anthem singer bailed at the last moment. Also, Jackson couldn’t sing on the Simpsons because of his record contract. While the rumour persists he did anyway, the audio producer swears he has the chain of custody of the tapes of the impersonator singing. It’s why Jackson helped write “Do the Bartman” but took no credit. He also stated not singing “was a joke on his brothers”.

Yeah, if you watch All American and Championship Wrestling specifically leading up to the first Wrestlemania, Mean Gene promotes hard that it is a star so big they can't mention them on TV and you'll have to tune in to see them sing the anthem. Either they had someone huge planned, as rumored in the newsletters, or it was a huge rib and it was always going to be Gene.

Even if it was a rib mean gene isn't the worst performance of the anthem at wrestlemania. That imo goes to Wm 14 and whatever that was they tried.

They should have gotten Prince. He did appear shortly after that on Tuesday Night Titans.

At least we all remember it, even if it's because it was extremely bad. But I prefer that to a completely forgettable performance by bores like Ashanti or someone from Destiny's Child or the others whose names I can't be bothered to look up who think going "Oooooh" a lot constitutes an impressive vocal performance.

You mean Tinashe or something? That was gonna lead to a new boom period, it was such a huge get for WWE.

Those wrap around were shot weeks in advance - it is possible they were close but didn't want to jynx it if no contract was signed, something they should have done for Wrestlemania III before promoting The Boz and Samantha Fox and then quietly dropping the subject.

I had never heard about this before. Was Samantha Fox even well known in the US? Yeah, five US Top 100 songs, three of which were 8 or better. By 1987 she was pretty big in the US but surprisingly she'd get even bigger the next year with "Naughty Girls", her biggest hit in the US.
