Rita and Runt: Booo! I guess even with Broadway still down they couldn't get Bernadette Peters back for some new material.
Guessing it has more to do with Runt pretty much being a Rain Man parody, and that's definitely more frowned upon in 2020
I guess they could cut out Runt's "autistic" elements if they wanted to. Other than the Hoffman imitation, Runt really didn't do anything that made him act like he was on the spectrum or provide a bad image of someone on the spectrum.
So...are the Goodfeathers cancelled for being Italian stereotypes? Slappy for stereotyping elderly people? Katie Kaboom because blowing up = terrorism? Mindy and Buttons because Buttons took a lot of abuse, and that can be seen as animal abuse?
New characters? Hope they aren't Little Britain USA lame.
Always thought that Runt was just the stereotypical dumb dog, never saw anything autistic in his behaviour.
he was pretty blatantly a parody of Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man.
I never saw the movie as a kid and knew that.
the Definitely...definitely... speech pattern is directly from it.
besides any talk of being potentially offensive... Rain man came out in 1988... how many people watching at this point are even going to recognize it?
And I think that's where "autistic qualities" ends with the character. They can remove that part of his speech pattern if they fear people looking it as a stereotype/dated reference, and the character wouldn't be that different, honestly.
there was more to it than just the definitely defintely... the entire demeanor of Runt was based on the character.
This is also all speculation as to why it's not there.
IT could have been they couldn't get Bernadette Peters as well.
Or it could be that from my recollection it was one of the lower rated segments on the show.
Weird, I didn't take any of Runt's personality as being like the Dustin Hoffman character outside of the Definitely thing. He was, as someone said, just a typical dumb dog.
Without Broadway, you'd think BP would be around, moreso with celebrities working on more animated series and reality/talk shows. Unless she is working on different projects, or she just wasn't interested in returning to A! at all? (I don't recall any bad blood or Old Shame from Peters about the show...)
It is probably the latter, though. As after the first season or two, R&R were quickly made into background characters and really didn't get their own shorts anymore.
