WWE has removed the following programs from the Network.
Bret Hart: The Best There Is, The Best There Was, The Best There Ever Will Be (2005) The Most Powerful Families in Wrestling (2007) Hart and Soul: The Hart Family Anthology (2010) Top 50 Superstars of All Time (2010) Greatest Rivalries: Bret vs. Shawn (2011) Legends of Wrestling: Canada (2011) Bret Hart: The Dungeon Collection (2013)
It's likely this is due to the Stampede Wrestling footage of Bret that was included.

I'm out of the loop. Are there licensing issues with Stampede right now?

I'm out of the loop. Are there licensing issues with Stampede right now? Years before WWE purchased the Stampede footage, Bret had his father put in writing that Bret would have ownership of his matches no matter what. If WWE wants to use a Bret Hart match from Stampede, they have to go through him first. WWE put some episodes of Stampede's weekly TV show on the Network a few years ago that included Bret and pulled them a short time later after Bret contacted them about it.

Wonder if Bret is on bad terms with the company again, either that or they're renegotiating with him about the footage.

I suspect, with the Network no longer the major revenue driver the company had hoped it would be, WWE is trying to low-ball on a lot of these kinds of deals. Given their recent financial reporting, though, WWE may well find themselves over a barrel with someone like Bret. You don't release 40% of your staff and talent, report record profits for the fiscal year, then expect not to pay an inflated price to those who a) know their value to your branding and b) know you can afford just about anything they might ask.

One of the reasons Punk walked was because of their "I dunno" approach to royalties and pay once everything moved to the Network.

When WWE released the 2005 DVD Bret Hart: The Best There Is, the Best There Was, the Best There Ever Will Be, Hart gave WWE permission to use his Stampede footage for that documentary.
When Hart and Soul: The Hart Family Anthology was released in 2010, WWE included footage of Bret in Stampede Wrestling without asking him. Hart didn’t press the issue because his niece Natalya and nephew Harry Smith were working for WWE at the time. He also thought the entire Hart family would benefit from the DVD.
WWE then used it for another documentary, so Bret contacted Mark Carrano to get it removed. Carrano said he should contact WWE's legal department. Bret sent a text to Vince McMahon, who had it taken down and apologized.
This week was a similar situation. Someone told Hart they saw him vs. Dynamite Kid from Stampede on WWE Network. Hart sent texts to McMahon and Triple H about it. They said they would have taken it down as soon as possible, which it was.

This seems silly from both sides: WWE repeatedly using/posting stuff they don't have rights to, and Bret shutting it down rather than just naming his price. You'd think he'd want as many people watching his matches as possible and would offer WWE permission at a reasonable cost. Or maybe he has and they'd rather keep trying to be sneaky than pay him anything.

Thanks. This stuff is pretty cool. I wouldn't mind the Hitman insignia mug.

Or maybe he has and they'd rather keep trying to be sneaky than pay him anything. As far back as the 90’s, Bret has been a stickler for how his matches are used in WWE and always wanted ownership of them. He wanted a Best of Bret Hart collection on VHS, there were some anyway, back then. It’s been a bug up his ass for years and years. Well preceding the Screwed DVD.

It might be the Stampede Wrestling footage those rights are in limbo It's pretty straightforward. WWE owns the Stampede library, but Bret has control over the footage that has him in it thanks to his father putting that in writing years before WWE bought the footage. People on WWE's production team that are unaware of this will occasionally put up Stampede footage with Bret, which then gets removed once Bret contacts Vince about it.
