There was nothing wrong with his presentation at all in NXT. Not one thing. WWE having to make NXT wrestlers "THEIR VERSION" of the wrestler, never works, and constantly waters down if not completely kills the very reason they got over in NXT. It's mind boggling, NXT is now their third brand, it's on NATIONAL TELEVISION. When they were just a Network Exclusive, you could argue some merit to it, but when WWE takes wrestlers from NXT and completely changes everything about their presentation for no reason, it's not only distracting, it's a constant downgrade. And then we get to the booking which is an entirely seperate issue with them, and that's just as bad. So many NXT stars fail because of this unecessary bullshit, it's why when NXT stars leave for the main roster, it feels like a kiss of death. Vince likes Lee, keep that in mind. He did this to someone he LIKES. That's the terrifying part.

They really just made Keith Lee do a "Fortunat-Lee" pun and his current gimmick is "He is Drew McIntyre's close friend".
I can't believe how bad this has gone for him right out of the gate, Vince really sucks at this.

Why did it have to be Randy Orton though?

I don’t like any of the changes they made either, but holy f*** they did not ruin him. If next week he gets RKO’d or punted and beat by Randy then by all means, go off. But as far as tonight, he’s involved in a feud with the WWE Champion and Randy Orton. He’s doing ok so far.

This is a man who Vince apparently loves. It might be he’s less spiteful to his audience and just awful at his job now.

I can't speak to the gear change, but I'm guessing the theme change was because he still had a CFO$ theme and they wanted to get him changed to a Def Rebel one?

I feel like if the broad reception is, "He's ruined," then he's ruined. Authorial intent doesn't really mean anything.

The theme and gear changes are being met with immense blowback. They just can't leave guys alone, Vince has to have "his vision". Your vision sucks dude, how many times do you gotta be told? Jeez...

They're either going to:
- Beat the guy about to challenge for the world title
or...
- Beat the highly touted guy who just debuted in his second match (and still without a win on the main roster).

Holy shit that's the fastest a top prospect became just another guy on the roster.

Third wheeling him to Drew making him "Drew's very good friend" out of nowhere has basically made it so that he's been put in a no win situation. He came in his own man and left as "Drew McIntyre's friend fighting for him", that's f***ing booking death when you were a world champion two days ago.

Holy shit that's the fastest a top prospect became just another guy on the roster. Paige was called up to Raw back in 2014, and suddenly went from badass face on NXT to timid underdog who got lucky beating AJ Lee for the Divas Title.

It’s a foot race to jump on the “incredible talent is ruined by lame new theme and gear” take. Which is especially great, because his old theme and gear were hated at the beginning as well.
It’s all about how he’s booked. Having his first match end in a DQ and him disappearing didn’t fill me with hope, but I at least have to see how the Payback match goes first. You can overcome a generic theme and wrestling in a shirt. If he’s saddled as “Drew’s friend” after Sunday, then I’ll worry more.

Issue is, WWE has given us no reason to have faith in them booking anyone, in the short or long term. And with Lee crashing out the gate and it being recieved as poorly as it has been, that's not a good sign.

Beyond the awful theme and gear changes, beyond the fact that he lost his debut singles match by DQ...have Keith and Drew interacted at all, either on the main roster or NXT, prior to tonight? Because it seemed like they pulled that bit of character completely out of thin air.

Because it seemed like they pulled that bit of character completely out of thin air. They’ve been portraying them as friends, but almost entirely with the YouTube stuff. Particularly the 10 minute or so video they put out of them training together last week for their respective weekend matches.

f*** it....give him Brodus’s theme next week if we are gonna fully neuter him.
Talk about going from hero to zero in a matter of days.
