How that man never received a red card while playing for United I'll never know.

And that’s Celtic out of the Champions League. OH GOD DAMMIT YOU MUPPETS a goal in injury time too well at least they're in a euro league worthy of their position PLEASE let rangers beat malmo and give us something to watch in the groups ... hibernian and aberdeen have healthy leads going into the second legs though, and go into the third qualifying round!

Arsenal finally sign Ben White for an over inflated £50m. I like the guy, he is a good player and had an excellent season, and am happy he signed (I live in Brighton so this deal feels very close to home), but f***ing hell, there's definitely an extra £20m added on there just because of his nationality. Weird to see Arsenal doing so much incoming business, don't think this will be it either!

Has Rodriguez ever really settled at a club since Porto?

Has Rodriguez ever really settled at a club since Porto? I think the biggest issue is he's never been as consistent a performer at club level as he is for Colombia. Given he's very much a luxury player if he's not performing he quickly becomes a liability. Last season he started the season well and finished it reasonably, but faded badly in the winter months, suggesting that no, he can't do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke. As for Real Madrid and Bayern, he simply had to compete against better players in his favoured positions.

Is James Rodriguez the biggest example of ‘Don’t buy a player off a great World Cup performance’ ever?
The only other one springing to mind atm is El Hadji Diouf who looked like an absolute world beater at Japan/South Korea 2002 but rarely produced that at Liverpool.

The only other one springing to mind atm is El Hadji Diouf who looked like an absolute world beater at Japan/South Korea 2002 but rarely produced that at Liverpool. The first person I thought of before I read the second part of your post was Diouf. Not only did he under-perform for every team he played for since that World Cup, he’s an absolute bell-end. I know he didn’t move for a couple of years after the tournament (although as one of those years was spent injured the transfer would have gone ahead earlier) but Lazio basically signing Gazza off the back of Italia 90 is worthy of a mention. He was never fully fit, behaved like a tit and as he didn’t have anyone there to control him, he damn near buried his career. Luckily his move to Rangers revitalised him for a while and he would have undoubted moments of genius in an England shirt but it wasn’t the same. His reckless challenge on Gary Charles in the 91 Cup Final (which could have easily snapped his leg and Gazza should have been red-carded) ended up knackering his career when he should have been in his prime.

United signing Karel Poborsky after Euro '96 is another one that comes to mind. He didn't ever really play badly for us, but arriving just in time for David Beckham to solidify himself as a top class talent was just bad luck. Poborsky never really hit the heights of his Euro '96 performances anywhere else, either, though.

Luckily for us, Poborsky chose United and so we went with the other stand out Czech player in that tournament.
