I get asking talent to use their own names on these platforms (I don’t agree but I get the reasoning) but if they are banning everyone from being creative and making money outside of WWE it is absolutely nuts. Particularly during a pandemic where it’s been shown they will kick talent to the curb on a whim.

Other people have said what I'd say about this way better. Disgraceful and another sign of how WWE needs to unionise. Also, when it comes to outside ventures detrimental to the company... Hmm, remember Stand Up For WWE and the outside venture that lost Vince a ton of money? Twice?

No way to confirm if this is the reason that Vince decided to lay down this decree, but if it is, it's even stupider. He is really treating COVID like it's f***ing Voldemort.

Not to throw cold water on the "They're finally gonna form a union!" brigade, but what's always killed the idea of unions in wrestling is the top guys not getting behind it. Given how willing guys like Reigns, Rollins and Strowman are to defend Vince and the company at all turns, I just can't see them risking their spots in Vince's good graces so Asuka can keep her YouTube channel.
It's a cutthroat, carny business at heart. They didn't unionize after Montreal, Owen's death, the Saudi incident or the early days of the pandemic, in addition to countless other edicts and incidents that affected all of them, not just a handful with outside revenue streams. I just don't see it ever happening with the mentality of the business.

Ok, so WWE can't go after anyone legally if they use YouTube/Twitch/Cameo/etc. under their real name, but they're still telling people to close their accounts? What the hell is that about? Because even if this just turns out to be a matter of "don't use WWE branding on your outside endeavors", why wouldn't the message to the talent just be that instead of "END YOUR ACCOUNTS BY NEXT MONTH, PAL"? And yeah, this is straight out of Sony's playbook when it comes to not allowing cross-system compatibility: it's the year 2020, media is more readily available than ever, and people don't have as much patience for exclusivity, but Sony's there not allowing their games to work across other platforms, meanwhile Nintendo and Microsoft get to soak up positive press because they're more ok with it. You're a company already struggling with the young demographic; forget advertising dollars, you need young fans if your company is going to survive another twenty years because you need to replenish your fanbase with, you know, new fans. Again, it's 2020, and platforms like Twitch or YouTube or whatever are a big way to get your name out there, and if somebody sees Dakota Kai's gaming channel or Asuka's slice of life videos you increase the chance they'll follow them in WWE. Trying to end that is cutting off your nose to spite your face. EDIT: And if this turns into "WWE wants to make their own version of YouTube/Twitch/Cameo that the wrestlers will be on", piss the @#$% ooooooooooff. I don't care if they do that and offer the talent a cut; if the independent contractors want to use a third party platform as well, that's their right, full stop. Punk, dick that he is, has a good point. Call their bluff. Want out of your contract because you're miserable? Open a twitch stream. Jado, Gedo, and Tony Khan are all probably on a group call right now laughing their asses off at this and waiting to see who they can get on a firesale. Now I've got a mental image of a council table with Khan, Gedo, Don Callis, Delirious, Court Bauer, and Billy Corgan at it, with Gedo looking at this news, laughing hysterically, and yelling "DIS MADDAH-F@#$%AH!" before showing everybody else. |

There’s so many NFL and NBA guys on twitch and their leagues/teams don’t care at all. WWE is so bad at reading the room They also have unions and agents to represent their interests something pro wrestlers either plain don’t have (Unions) or very few actually have (an Agent. Christopher Daniels, Brock Lesnar and...that’s it?). It shit like this is why Jesse Ventura got an agent and wanted to Unionize. |
