I think someone trying to tightrope between 2 skyscrapers fell to his death, but his grandson completed the task a couple of decades later.

I think there was a guy who tried to prove his windows he sold were almost impossible to break. So he ran at the window and the frame popped out, and fell to his death from the tall building the window was at.
Technically he was right about the window. It didn't break.

There's the story of the guy who ran into in a glass window in a skyscraper to show how strong it was... but it hadn't been fixed properly so the whole thing popped out/

Franz Reichelt testing the homemade parachute that he invented by jumping off the Eiffel Tower back in 1912.
(The footage exists on a pathe news reel if you feel compelled to watch it.)

The Punisher did that to a woman, threw her against a glass window of a skyscraper, explaining that if he did it enough times the frame would bend and break while the window stayed intact. I wonder if Garth Ennis got his inspiration for that from this guy.

"this ship is unsinkable" If you mean the Titanic, technically she was never marketed as unsinkable that was something the press ran with after the tragedy.

Legend says that while crossing the Alps to invade Rome, Hannibal's army came upon a particularly dangerous pass that they refused to cross. In order to prove the pass was safe and move his army along, Hannibal angrily slammed his cane into the snow and ice covered ground. This caused an avalanche that wound up killing at least half of his army and a good chunk of his fabled elephants, and costing precious time that allowed the Roman's to properly build up for their fortifications for the attack. Who knows how ancient history might have turned out if Hannibal would've attacked Rome with his full army.
Of course this could all just be Roman propaganda.

I believe everything held the first time he did it. He did it a second time and plunged to his death.

Jim Fixx wrote several books about how running was a great form of exercise and would extend your life.
He suffered a massive heart attack and died while jogging at age 52.
