Dude’s going to be my NFL Marvin Bagley. Hopefully this time I’m wrong and he isn’t a useless bust.

The thing about Mac Jones is, if this were three years ago, he’d probably be the consensus #2 pick. His calling card is his accuracy, which would have been the thing everyone looked for as recently as 2018 (it’s why Baker went #1). Josh Allen has just caused everyone to go for the raw athlete with high upside. If I told you there were two QBs - one played in the SEC and was one of it not the most accurate passer in college football, and the other was a one-year FCS starter that has some accuracy issues - the SEC guy would unquestionably be the guy to take. Instead, I’m pretty sure most fans would prefer their team get Trey Lance, rather than Mac Jones.

It's not really a new development. The NFL has long drafted for potential over college production. Mike Vick was taken #1 overall when he had accuracy issues that continued basically until he played for QB guru Andy Reid and continued them shortly thereafter. Vick, of course, was taken a full round ahead of Drew Brees who is one of the most accurate QBs of all time. There have been plenty of inaccurate 1st round QBs drafted with guys like Jake Locker, Kyle Boller, Donovan McNabb, famously Tim Tebow, etc. There are a number of guys who have good accuracy #s, but aren't as accurate as they seem. Mac Jones had a pro day that implies he's not the most accurate passer ever. There have also been a nonzero number of guys with accuracy issues who changed them: Allen, Stafford, Favre, Prescott, Jackson, etc. There have also been a number of accurate passers who have had their ceilings limited by non-NFL arm talent: Sam Bradford, Chad Pennington, Teddy Bridgewater, Joey Harrington, etc. Tim Couch threw for 70+% in the SEC and is one of the bigger busts of the last 25 years. Also worth noting that there have been many QBs coming from good college situations that haven't quite been world beaters in the NFL. Jalen Hurts threw for 70% in the SEC and in the Big XII and isn't really seen as a franchise guy going forward. Matt Leinart was a world-beater until he stepped foot in the league without an overpowered supporting cast (and he still had Fitz and Boldin to throw to.) Which is obviously excluding system QBs like Colt Brennan and Graham Harrell. The NFL is always looking for NFL-caliber talent while taking into account college production. It's always been both, not either/or. And there has always been a premium on the upside and the skills, especially at the top of the draft and especially at QB. Eli was #1 overall as a senior in a loaded class while being a career 60% passer at Ole Miss. But he played in a pro style offense, against great defenses, with very little NFL talent around him, great pedigree, and most importantly, crazy arm talent. Over Philip Rivers who was more accurate and put up better numbers, but in Norm Chow's spread offense which at the time wasn't considered a "pro style" offense outside of the Rams or Colts of that era. It's a combination of skills, production, and situation.

Forget a QB at 3, the Niners just signed Nate “The Great” Sudfeld. No doubt from his impressive performance in Week 17!

Could be worse, you could be drafting your 2nd top 3 QB pick in less than 4 years As a Colts fan I thank your team for trading up to do that the first time. Ballard was always going to draft Nelson at #3, but was still able to do so at #6 and draft perhaps the best young RT in the NFL, in addition to a few other contributors.

Probably some level of CTE as a contributing factor

Probably some level of CTE as a contributing factor it has kind of already started, this dude, the Chiefs guy, Hernandez, Seau and others killing people and/or just themselves that there's no doubt in my mind The NFL is going to have a Benoit situation aka a big name player do something equal or more terrible at some point and that is f***ing awful.

Hey this dude was on the Pats in 2011 with Aaron Hernandez... He was also on five other teams and didn't last long on any of them. Kind of a career journeyman.
Wouldn't surprise me if CTE had something to do with this as opposed to someone like Hernandez being a cold blooded killer.

So people say we shouldn't assume it had anything to do with Hernandez but in the same breathe suggest CTE with zero evidence
Both are assumptions right now. We're better than this.
