Athleticism in the 90s?
Dude won the Heisman trophy at Florida State and could have had a solid career in the NFL. Instead, he went to the NBA and had a solid 12 year career there.
To be in a position to choose between the top leagues in 2 sports is just impressive athletically.

Underrated PG in the league with his time with the Knicks
That man was tough and doesn't get credit he deserves as an athlete

Charlie was way ahead of his time for the NFL. Back then you had to be a 6-5 white guy with the athleticism of a statue to play QB unless you were Randall Cunningham or Steve Young and even then you’d get the dreaded running QB label.
I don’t think that he was even drafted by the NFL if I remember correctly.

You're right, teams were looking at him but he had said publicly unless he was going to be a first rounder he would see where the NBA took him. Knicks picked in their first round and that was it for his football career.
He was a solid player during the last hurrah of the 90s Ewing/Starks/Oakley Knicks and around for the transition to the Allen Houston and co era.
Then the wheels fell off around 2003 and I haven't been truly invested in the NBA since to be honest haha. NYK have been garbage for an entire generation now.

Yeah, I liked him as a kid when I was really into the Knicks. Incredible athlete and I agree he was underrated as a point guard. It wasn't until much later that I knew he was a star college QB and even won the Heisman.
I think if he was in his prime around today's game where the Black quarterback is a much more common sight, especially with prolific passers like Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes around, he could've ended up an upper round pick in the NFL. Possibly first round.

He made the right choice. A 12 year career in NBA is certainly more likely and better on your body Than an NFL career
