Just watching his debut and realized how much of a disaster it was seeing the gimmick get shat all over before it was even given a proper chance.
The entrance was great, the vignettes were chilling and Dustin Rhodes could've finally had a main event gimmick if he ran with it... But nah, let's shit all over it on the first night, talk about how THEY made you wear this stupid outfit and then go back to plain ol' Dustin Rhodes the next week. Cause that's what everyone is begging for... A blonde dude in black trunks.
I'm gonna take a stab at it and say that nobody was stopping the channel to see "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes.
Imagine Mark Calaway said this on his Undertaker debut.
Thoughts?

It was over the top, but I’m a sucker for that kind of thing, so I would’ve enjoyed it.

Dustin said Russo nixed the character, but Russo said that TBS did. By the way, unless I didn't see the Nitro episode where Dustin was wearing black trunks, the red pants were what he changed to after Seven:

Nah, he was just too wholesome for the Bundy family.

I don’t think so. People liked the Bundy’s as is. Adding a younger character didn’t really add too much to the show.

Imagine Mark Calaway said this on his Undertaker debut. Thoughts? Now what writer would insist that everyone say Undertaker was just a guy named Mark who believed in his character? Hmmmmm? Anyway....I'm not sure. Would WCW fans crap on it anyway cause we all knew it was Dustin/Goldust? Would fans in general write it off as an Undertaker knockoff? BTW, from the WCW thread...love how they were planning on "Platinum" to eventually replace regular Dustin. Take a drink every time he has sworn off Goldust only to go right back to it or something like it.

Probably not. It was a clear rip off of the Undertaker.

No. Even if the character was really strong (which it was not), it seemed pretty clear that Dustin was out of shape, bitter, and seemingly washed up.
Whatever character he was wrestling as at the time was doomed to failure, and it took him awhile to climb out of that hole.

also as for Russo on one hand I could see S&P axing it I guess... but the same token Russo blames them for f***ing everything.

IIRC, there was a rash of child kidnappings in the news at the time, so Turner probably thought the idea of a creepy facepaint man preying on children would be a “too soon” scenario.
