Glad I have the DVDs. I did give it a rewatch on Netflix.
Just another example why I still prefer physical media.

I'm probably in the minority, but in my opinion, this dude comes across as the biggest asshole. This is the guy who said the Louis CK backlash was 'overblown' and blamed the #MeToo movement for various things that I can't mention on this board.
You're rich (bitch), let people watch your show. The man made $20 million alone per Netflix stand-up special, I think he's doing fine with his residuals.

For those interested, Dave put up an 18 minute bit on Instagram that culminates in him talking about this.

If Key and Peele weren’t getting royalties from their show on Comedy Central, yeah, they’ll likely be doing fine regardless but that’s still money they’d be entitled for going to people who didn’t do the work.

I still stand by my belief that the man is human trash who is given a free pass on a lot of bullshit. Has nothing to do with this topic, but there you go.

Right You're talking about one of the more popular comedy shows of the generation if not all time. Not getting any paper from that work and then watching them still make deals and profit is a no go

Think he’s one of the GOAT. Don’t always agree with him. I get why he’s pissed/mad about it but meh..I think it comes across lame too.

Dave is one of greats and his netflix specials I still regularly watch. I feel for his pain and watching other people make money off something he created. Yet I am not a lawyer, judge, or executive who would have a say in these kind of things. I will respect Dave's wish and not engage in viewings of Chappelle show. It's just another example of the "monster" taking and profiting off someone's creative vision. If we are going to complain about WWE taking profits from wrestlers using twitch and cameo then it seems to me we should be supporting Dave as well. It's weird that if you're a musician and a show uses your music (before such a thing as streaming existed) they'd have to either change the music or pay you. Yet Dave signed the contract that gave Viacom rights to his works, name, and likeness and he doesn't make a dime off it. I get that's the game, but it's a pretty crappy game that we see artists (such as Taylor Swift, Dave Chappelle, Prince, and the WWE wrestlers) try to deal with in various ways. “So I’m not going to the agents, I’m coming to my real boss — I’m coming to you. I’m begging you — if you ever liked me, if you ever think there was anything worthwhile about me, I’m begging you, please don’t watch that show. I’m not asking you to boycott any network — boycott me. Boycott Chappelle’s Show. Do not watch it unless they pay me.”

Maybe I take some of the stuff he says too lightly, but if you are referring to the Louis CK and Metoo comments from his actual stand up specials, I thought he was just being funny. Like, I get that there's a level of truth to comedy, but the stuff he said about Louis CK and stuff was not actually defending his actions or anything.

That's not the way it works One has nothing to do with the other Also, like, the entire issue is that he’s not getting residuals from his older works. If Key and Peele weren’t getting royalties from their show on Comedy Central, yeah, they’ll likely be doing fine regardless but that’s still money they’d be entitled for going to people who didn’t do the work. Just a reminder, in the residuals and royalties discussion: Bill Finger helped create Batman and the only money he made for it was work for hire. If he didn't write Batman, he made nothing for Batman. While Bob Kane lived in luxury for the rest of his life because he had the contracts in his name, Bill died in a NYC apartment with an eviction notice on the door. Even if Finger wrote every story at DC for decades, had a lucrative working career and never struggled to find work until the day he died, he'd be owed the residual/royalties back pay for what he did in the past. It matters.

It also has to be said, for as great as him getting acknowledged in the comics and other media is, that still doesn’t make up for the years of being screwed over by Kane and the other DC brass that neglected him.

I’m not decrying it too much, but he had Louis on one his shows this summer. So he must not care TOO much. Then again, everyone in comedy knew the Louis stuff 5 years before it came and no one cared until the public at large knew. So 🤷🏻♂️

Gotta say I am not agreeing with Dave here. He signed a big contract for future seasons of Chappelles show. They funded the show, gave him tons of creative freedom and paid him well. He then had an emotional crisis where he realized he was appealing to the wrong demographic and quit. Viacom could have held him to his contract but they let him out. The new contract he signed gave up his residuals. Now he doesn't want them to profit from it. It's not like he is hurting for money or anything.
Its not like the Brock/WWE situation where to get out he signed away his ability to make any income for a decade. Dave was able to work as a standup, make any new show he wanted, etc. He just gave away his future profit from a show he wanted nothing to do with anymore.

So he is referencing a contract he signed after he left CC? I took it as he was talking about the contract he signed when the show started.
