Yep. At his request for fans to boycott it, I respectfully think “f*** that”. Chappelle Show might be one of the best shows I’ve seen in my lifetime. It really made my high school years. And it’s a credit to him and it’s a shame shit went south but he’s thriving. He didn’t stop Charlie Murphy and Donnel Rawlings from doing season three. To tell fans to boycott it “unless he gets paid”...SMH. I just can’t agree with that. SNL will always be SNL, but IMO.... Chappelle's Show in 2 seasons (3 was a clear downgrade, but still funny) was above just about everything post Not Ready for Prime Time Players SNL and is on par with the first 5 seasons of SNL. Not sure how many agree with me, but that is my belief. Can’t really speak to that cause I’ve only seen here and there of SNL since the 90s but I know at the time, Chappelle Show felt groundbreaking. Like Dave just had his finger on the pulse, on the zeitgeist of comedy. He got frustrated at fans later on saying he “fought for them.” For their intelligence, and the show showed that. It felt like it gave the audience the benefit of the doubt of being smart and laughing at all of the absurdity w/ actual themes and ideas behind it. Two fricken seasons and it’s stayed relevant and popular all these years. FFS, there’s a hilarious and popular WWE thread of it. Just an amazing show.

Those first 2 seasons of Chappelle show were the best comedy on tv since the first 3 seasons of In Living Color. Both shows were can't miss.

Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan did an incredible job with the writing for Chappelle's Show and produced two of the funniest seasons of sketch comedy ever. The Lost Season felt like a big downgrade, but that was when Dave dealing with a lot of bullshit and I dunno how involved Neal was, either.
It's telling how hard Comedy Central tried to re-capture lightning in a bottle with all the failed "Solo Comedian Does A Sketch Show" copycats that followed only for all of them to fail miserably.

Key and Peele was also very successful and helped produce a highly acclaimed filmmaker. Sure it didn’t start until 2012, but it was clearly in the same mold as Chappelle’s Show. In Dave’s first Netflix special he even joked with a line like, “I had to sit back and watch Key and Peele do my show.”

Mind of Mencia lasted that long?! How? Carlos Mencia is one of the least funny people to have ever lived.
And Key and Peele was a duo so I don't include them with those attempts. Their style of humor is also a lot different, especially the last couple of seasons. You could also see some of the horror influences Peele had with some foreshadowing of what he'd become as a more serious filmmaker.

If Chappelle signed a contract that says he does not get residuals then I’m not sure I understand his point of view here, unless there was some type of fraud or coercion I’m unaware of.

Its the standard position any aspiring entertainer gets put in. The studio/record label/network gives you a contract that has ya by the balls. If you say no they say f*** you and the deal is off. Chappelle had to have made some money for doing the show, but when it blew up and he became a cultural mega star he now has a platform to put that practice in the spotlight. Im sure Viacom never renogtiated the deal because legally they didnt have to. Dave is now putting the matter in the court of public opinion, and he probably will win. Netflix is playing game, all it will take now is HBO to yank it and Dave will have Viacom by the balls. Fair enough to me.

But to get real honest here, they agreed to pay him 50 million for the 3rd season of Chappelle show which he didn't get cause he walked away..he walked away because it bothered him fratty white dudes were screaming his catch phrases even at him, which honestly he should have known would happen. I'm a fan of Dave's but I don't feel real sorry for a guy that got 60 mill for 3 comedy specials complaining about his lack of royalties because he signed a bad contract followed by breaching the good one he leveraged himself into.

HBO max doesn’t have the same incentive to keep him happy. His recourse was to try to renegotiate the terms when first presented or what would have been easier, negotiate residuals into his subsequent $50 million dollar deal for season 3 that he ended up breaching.

It’s the same whining Taylor Swift is doing. You signed the deal now you don’t like it. Tough. Matt Groening sold the Simpsons and has very little of the rights but he was smart enough to keep the merchandise. That’s why there’s every Simpsons thing you can imagine, he makes his real money on the merchandise. Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards decided one of the reasons they wanted to end Seinfeld was because they got nothing for syndication. Their hard work would only make other people more money. So they agreed it was time to end the show. When Alice Cooper signed with Frank Zappa, Zappa said “I’ll publish the music” and Shep Gordon says “We will co-publish the music”. Alice asked Shep what that was, Shep says “No idea. But if they want it that’s means it’s worth something”. The bad deals you sign are your problem.

For what it's worth, the one-hour set of South Park followed by Chappelle for those two years may be the funniest hour of TV in history.

Comedy Central in the early-mid 00's had an incredible strong lineup of shows. Chappelle's Show, South Park, Daily Show, Crank Yankers, and Colbert Report. You also had some fun game shows like Win Ben Stein's Money and Beat the Geeks. And then lots of quality stand-up shows between CC Presents, Premium Blend, and dedicated stand-up specials.
It's sad what's happened to the network since. Last solid run of original content the channel had IMO was when they had the tail end of Jon Stewart's Daily Show and the Colbert Report along with Key & Peele, Broad City, and @midnight. Hannibal Buress' short-lived show was also pretty fun but it only lasted for a season. I also really liked The Nightly Show with Larry Willmore, but they never really gave it a chance.

I also really liked The Nightly Show with Larry Willmore, but they never really gave it a chance. As someone who watched that from a distance, that REALLY annoyed me how much they messed around with that show. And then they axed it during an election year? You’re not giving Wilmore the chance to cut loose during that time? Come on, man. Hell, Netflix did the same to Hasan Minhaj earlier this year for his show and it’s like “do you want good content or...?”

Comedy Central also had Norm MacDonald host a sports show that was hysterically funny as well. This was in 2011. I was so mad they didn't keep that going.
