Was hoping there would be some sort of breakthrough today regarding the lockout but it’s been quiet

MLB definitely missing regular season games if this thing isn’t resolved by the final week of February. They basically need spring training to start March 1 to give the players 4 weeks to get ready, which means they need a deal by like Feb 26 or so. Based on today’s news they are still not close. Seems inevitable that regular season games will be lost.
SuperBowl is in Feb. NBA regular season runs until April. NFL draft is in April. NBA playoffs from April-June. NBA draft in July. NFL pre season in August and regular season in September. NBA starts up again in October. That’s not even mentioning hockey.
MLB is nuts if they think people are gonna wait around for them to come back. The diehards will but they are going to lose some casuals and younger people with this lockout, and no one is breaking Bonds’ HR record to bring them back. Big mess.

Matt Harvey really was the new Doc Gooden. Only, not in any of the good ways.

You don't often hear me say this after someone turns down $350 million, but he was smart not to take that offer. Juan Soto is set to hit free agency after his age-25 season, when he'll be just entering his prime years. At 22 years old, he's already an All-Star with three top-10 MVP finishes. He's hitting every mark en route to becoming the best player in baseball, and he's still three years younger than the current National League Rookie of the Year. He should smash every contract record that is out there when he hits free agency in the 2024-25 off-season. The record right now belongs to Mike Trout's 12-year, $426.5 million deal that he signed in 2019. Barring injury or some totally unforeseen dip in play, Soto is probably going to land a $500 million deal.

Barring injury or some totally unforeseen dip in play, Soto is probably going to land a $500 million deal. Agreed. If you look deeper into Soto’s situation, you could argue that 13/350 was a lowball offer, which is crazy when it’s $350m guaranteed. He has 3 years of arbitration left and he is projected to make $16m in 2022. If you assume he gets around $65-70m over his arbitration years (which is probably a safe bet as long as he stays healthy), then the Nats were essentially trying to buyout his free agent years at a cost of about 10 years, $280-285 million, which would be selling his free agent years way short. Make the $65-70m in arbitration then go to free agency after age 25 and get another $450-500 million. It’s a risk because 3 years is a long time and one injury can ruin everything but if he stays healthy then he will have every big market team fighting for him in 3 years.

I would have taken the deal with opt out options in place after like Year 5 and 8 and if they didn’t agree to that then you keep your options open. I would just used my leverage to my advantage

What a f***ing mess. I heard they met for a whopping 15 minutes, yesterday. I’m definitely siding with the players. But it’s now a situation where no one looks good. My main feeling is FIGURE IT THE f*** OUT before the ever dwindling number of us that still enjoy watching your sport get fed up with the BS.

The owners are more interested in winning than negotiating a fair deal.

According to Jeff Passan and others, the owners have apparently set a deadline of Feb 28 as the final day they can come to an agreement to start the regular season on time. If not, then regular season games will be lost. Seems like they are set to meet Monday and could be meeting nearly everyday next week up until the deadline. Maybe I’m naive but I think they’ll end up with a deal by Feb 28. Deadlines usually drive decisions, and they finally seem to have one. Plus, it’s not like one side wants a salary cap and the other doesn’t. This is purely about money and how to split $10b in revenue. They’d have to be insane to miss time for that.
I guess we will see how insane they are.

MLB and the owners slapping their balls on the negotiating table. Let’s see if the players union whacks them with a hammer.

They seem so far apart that my earlier optimism of them getting a deal done before Feb 28 has pretty much faded. Can’t believe a $10b sport is going to intentionally lose games because of distribution of revenue. The players literally just want to be paid a bit more earlier in their careers. That’s it. If they met somewhere in the middle with the players demands, then the owners would still get the majority of the revenue in that scenario. Like, this is insane that they can’t have the game on the field for this.
