I don't know if baseball can afford a big lockout that kills too many games right now. The general public just sees millionare players fighting with billionare owners while inflation/economy/war kills their meager thousandare finances at home. A home run contest won't save them this time. We aren't that naïve.

I almost always side with labor and even when I don't, I'll never side with "the man" in these disputes. But at this point, I'm like "a pox on both your houses."

Both deserve a shit ton of blame
They know MLB couldn't afford this after a pandemic shortened season already still in their back pocket. Just feels like Players not going walk away with at least 80% of what they wanted

The players were screwed in previous CBAs and they are trying to get all their money back in one negotiation. I feel like if they took a small win in this round, they could build off that for the future, but they want to go 0 to 100 because of how unfair the existing system was, and there’s no way owners are going to agree to that. If it’s a game of chicken, then the players will lose. The owners could afford to miss a season and not have it impact them too much. The players are the ones who lose guaranteed money, lose a year of their careers, etc. This is going to get ugly, and the fans will be the ones who suffer the most.

MLB can't afford a missed season and expect less of a hit to revenues than they'd have to offer to players. The MLBPA just need to come up with what is the worst we're willing to take on minor league pay, revenue sharing, etc and just keep negotiating until they get those. The players are always the ones who have to end up taking less to get us back to playing games (outside of the NBA), so I have no problem with them holding up games by saying no. We don't support any unions enough in this country if we're being honest.

The worst owner in all of baseball is stepping down as CEO of the Miami Marlins and is getting rid of his share of the team. The Derek Jeter Era is finally over.
Can't wait to see the next guy to poison the well.

So there's ongoing discussions and they are now currently in hour 15 of discussions. Another meeting with Representatives and Players is happening right now
This went from "Expected to cut into the regular season" to very quickly trying to brute force a resolution by morning.

14 team playoffs is stupid. Unless the 7 seed Reds beat the 1 seed Dodgers, in which case it’s brilliant.

We are now going into Meeting 13, everything is apparently being discussed, the only one who has left is Yankees owner Steinbrenner, but it's not clear why, some rumors that he might be getting a jump on the free agent market because trends are pointing towards it being positive this is POSSIBLY done by morning.

The season being normal or not will be decided tomorrow. Let's see if the Owners want their wallets to hurt a little or a lot...

At the very least, I applaud both sides in that they seemingly want to get a deal done. But an overly expanded playoffs is beyond stupid in baseball. I could live with 6 per league but that would best work with a two team expansion and have the old NFL blueprint

I mean you really have to hand it to MLB. They are past masters of f***ing things up and hurting the game of baseball. I mean all American sports have had disruption due to labour disputes but baseball seem to excel at alienating the fans. I mean you’d have thought that after that clusterf*** in 1994/95 that the hint of a repeat would bring the MLB higher ups out in a cold sweat but clearly not. I mean even during a global pandemic where the other major sports worked something out, MLB f***ed it up. As I say it’s almost impressive how stupid they are.

If they make the playoffs too big they'll be playing the World Series at Thanksgiving
