I can't remember them doing a 'pure historical' yet in Nu Who. There's always been some kind of alien or time traveler or alien time traveler in there somewhere. And Classic Who went that way quickly, too. As mentioned, Black Orchid was the last in the classic show, and before then you have to go all the way back to the Second Doctor's second story - The Highlanders. Big Finish have done a whole bunch, thankfully, but in terms of the tv show they sadly were only really a thing for the First Doctor, as they tended to alternate between sci-fi/future/space adventures with historicals in turn. I say sadly because, while the prevailing wisdom was that they just didn't have enough of a gimmick to grab an audience, nearly all the best Hartnell stories were those historicals, I'd argue. The Aztecs, Marco Polo, The Romans, The Crusade and The Massacre are all good. The Massacre also has the First Doctor put together a speech towards the end in the TARDIS that probably informed a good percentage of all the speeches in Nu-Who

Marian Conspiracy is a good pure historical from Big Finish that nu-Who would be wise to crib from in terms of structure. Not only does do an effective job of exploring a historical figure without excusing their action but also allows for believable tension and resolution for the Companion and the Doctor in terms of the stakes.
Get a decent writer in and the Doctor and company in a setting like the Russian Revolution could make for a decent pure historical, especially if it was a two parter.

There's a tiny bit of intrigue to where the Doctor actually comes from, but the idea that the Doctor can regenerate indefinitely takes away some drama from the show. I always said one of the best things RTD did was establish that if the Doctor is killed instantly then they can't regenerate because it means there are still stakes.

The Massacre also has the First Doctor put together a speech towards the end in the TARDIS that probably informed a good percentage of all the speeches in Nu-Who Among the reasons it would just be so wonderful to see any surviving footage of The Massacre come to light - it's an outstanding showcase for Steven, for one thing - that introspective, desperate speech from Hartnell near the end is one of his best scenes ever yet little-known due to nothing surviving but the audio.

I mentioned this in the series 12 thread, might as well mention it here. To anybody interested, BBC America is airing the animated reconstruction of the lost Second Doctor story "Fury from the Deep" tomorrow evening (3/21/21). Probably the last chance for most of us to get a Doctor Who fix for the next few months.

Eccelston sounds...off there, like he's channelling a Ten script.
That trailer bored me pretty soundly sadly, don't think I'll pick this up.

{Spoiler}Look, I appreciate the return of Jack and all that, it was long overdue, but if we're heading back to the Victorian era, then I want Vastra, Jenny and Strax!
