From this thread, I got the idea of using salsa as a base.
Enjoyed the additional veggies. Using a fancy, artisan brand may have been a mistake as it made the chili a little bit too sweet for my taste (usually don't add any brown sugar or anything, I'm all about the savory), but it was an interesting experiment.
May try a base of crushed tomatoes and dirt cheap store brand salsa next time, see how that goes.

They're usually chunkier, less sweet and have less sodium then the salsa from the glass jars by the potato chips.

We had a chili cook-off at work earlier this year. The woman that won makes chili like pretty much anyone else. Except she puts a couple cups of diced potatoes in it.

ground chuck 1 large onion 1 bell pepper 4-6 jalapenos 6 small tomatoes 2 garlic cloves 2 cups beef broth 1/2 tsp flour salt garlic salt black pepper cayenne pepper chili powder cumin oregano
Simmer for at least 2 hours. Corn bread on the side. I was actually planning on making some this evening. I bought the ingredients last night.

I went to a Chili cooking contest once and one of the contestants put french fries in his chili. I admire his initiative but it really didn't taste very good.
