They were always bigger in Latin America and the Middle East than the west. I dunno, the KOF series seems to be pretty popular, and get a new game every year or pretty close to that, whereas Street Fighter and other fighting game series have gone dormant for more than a decade at times. King of Fighters isn't really the most active thing in the world in its own right; in the past decade the only game was in 2016. Also Street Fighter's never actually been dormant for a decade; the time between Third Strike and IV was only nine years.

In the FGC, SNK's fighters are definitely second banana to the Street Fighters and Smash Bros. of the world. In an already fairly niche genre like fighting games, they're pretty niche themselves.

Honestly, that’s probably the reason because they are low profile. There would probably be significant backlash from shareholders of other companies if there was any Saudi influence because of the bad PR it would bring and the titles some of these publishers still have. SNK...well, SNK is very much “Besides King of Fighters, what have you done for me lately?” so of course they’re going to take any kind of significant investment. For as much as it pains me to say it, a new Metal Slug wouldn’t do that well. I always wanted more Fatal Fury, unless KOF sucked the oxygen out of that. Crazy to think the last new, non-KOF Fatal Fury game we got was Mark of the Wolves back in 1999. Kind of a shame since I thought it was a great game and I would love to see a MOTW2. But it seems like that ship has sailed.

There's actually sprites of the new unnamed characters that was supposed to be in the sequel. It's a shame because I was interested on how Rock's story would have gone.

At least they didn't get Netherrealm, the fatalities would be a lot more uncomfortable.
(Seriously though, this is a letdown.)

SNK is a niche company? I'm not even a gamer and I know that they make Street Fighter style fighting games and stuff. They were always bigger in Latin America and the Middle East than the west. I'm American.

Yeah, I mean they added like one of their main guys to Smash and Nintendo/Namco felt that they needed to put out a "This is who this guy is and why he's important". they are absolutely a Niche... KOF/Fatal Fury and the like are also not their only series so even mentioning them simply as a company that makes fighting games also sorta proves that...

They were always bigger in Latin America and the Middle East than the west. I'm American. Right, but the point is that the average American, and even tons of American gamers, don't really know what SNK is. If it came out that, say, the crown prince was the biggest shareholder in Sega that would probably get more attention here, or bigger yet a company like Nintendo or something, but news like this isn't enough to make waves stateside outside of gaming journalism.

Now I hope this somehow leads to SNK making games with WWE stars in them. No but they are going to put in another wrestler

So as an update even though the deal's presently at 33% of the company, it will eventually expand to being 51% of it.
So yeah, pretty much safe to go ahead and write off SNK as a total loss.

Yes, and my point was that I think SNK might be more of a well known company than people are giving it credit for. It's totally okay that we have different opinions, I just want to make it clear that I am not misunderstanding, I'm disagreeing. And maybe not even disagreeing, just saying that people who think it's not very well known MIGHT be wrong.

Welp, King of Fighters never got close to topping Street Fighter anyway....
