Go for the obvious tie-in with the Rock and Roll HOF and call them the Cleveland Rockers.

Go for the obvious tie-in with the Rock and Roll HOF and call them the Cleveland Rockers. And step all over the legacy of the failed WNBA team, never. The Cleveland Wrecks of the Edmund Fitzgerald all the way.

I have no opinion either way but what was offensive about Indians? First there is the fact that the name Indians is ignorant in the first place, as Native Americans were not from India. Then start using other names and see how that feels. Cleveland Blacks, Cleveland Orientals, Cleveland Mexicans. (Note I choose somewhat offensive names in my examples, as I feel they better represent the somewhat offensive nature of Indian over Native American. Please no one here be offended by this.)

About time. Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Braves, I'm looking at you. Is Chief really all that offensive? Wouldn’t it be similar to a team name like the Kings? And if so, Is “Tribal Chief” Roman Reigns an offensive character? Redskins and Indians? yes, pretty controversial to say the least. But when I hear Chief, I think more along the lines of Superior, not Native American slur.

"Redskins" was clearly problematic and had to change, seething over the use of Indian vs Native American is primarily a white person thing and the name change is primarily to get PR plaudits from non-indigenous people. Even "Chiefs" and "Braves" is more problematic than this, which I don't think many indigenous people actually care about

Their redface mascot was a lot more problematic than the actual name, and they were already phasing him out. But it's a better look for Cleveland to drop the "Indians" name now as opposed to the way the Washington Football Team had to be dragged kicking and screaming by sponsors into dropping their racist name.

"Chiefs" by itself isn't racist or problematic. It's all the Native American imagery surrounding the team that makes it murky and a case of cultural appropriation. Like, you replace the arrowhead logo with say, a firefighter hat logo and it's perfectly fine.
As for Roman and his "Tribal chief" character: it's not offensive because it's his culture and this persona is likely coming from his own mind rather than being thrust upon him by a white promoter or something.

Yeah, honestly "Braves" and "Chiefs" aren't really problematic names so much as they get iffy once you factor in some of the imagery that surrounds them, like the awful tomahawk chop chant. Still could be worth considering changes, but in a vacuum they don't cause quite the same kind of headaches that the other names do.
Honestly, more teams that use indigenous imagery should do what Florida State does and reach out to the local nation to establish a strong relationship. Seminole people in Florida are involved in making things like outfits and other things culturally appropriate, and the school establishes a scholarship program and outreach with the Seminole nation, etc.
Cleveland Spiders would be a truly vintage throwback name, Cleveland Guardians has some support due to the famous statue in the city,

APBA doesn't have the trademark clearance for team names, so they're branded by what league they are in.
Chicago-National, Chicago-American, for example. Simple.
We have Washington Nationals, so why not Cleveland Americans?

I think the difference there is that someone of that minority is coming up with the gimmick, and not exactly invoking any negative stereotypes, just focusing on the family aspect while also cribbing a bit from Peter Maivia being the "High Chief" before. I'm not sure anyone of Native descent has ever even played for the Chiefs (or Washington for that matter)

The Cleveland Washington Football Teams....
The Indians name was obviously better than the Redskins, but it's still not a great look.
Chief Wahoo was probably the bigger issue but it's smart to just ditch the entire thing, because with the name still there people are still going to try and draw him / wear headdresses etc in the stands.
