I liked it, but wouldn’t even say it’s Humphrey Bogart’s best movie - I have The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo both ahead of it.

It's a fantastic film, not only for the quality of the dialogue and acting, but the political aspects of the script, and the very real subtext of how many of the cast were themselves displaced by the Nazi regime, from the extras through to major parts like Veidt and Lorre, once stars of Weimar cinema. It's hard not to get choked up at the Marseillaise scene.
And yeah, as you say, viciously funny film. As well as the infamous "Your winnings, sir." one of my faves is the elderly pair showing off their new English skills, it's one that my parents always quote to each other when wanting to know the time.
"What watch?" "Ten watch." "Such much?"

It's my favorite movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood. And Renault is one of my favorite characters ever. The other characters are great in their own way, but Renault stole the show for me.
For example:

Fun fact: the first German dub of this movie, released in 1952, was heavily edited along the following lines: -all scenes with Major Strasser and other Nazis were cut (that includes the famous battle of the songs between the Germans and the French). -Victor Laszlo, the fugitive Czech resistance leader, became Victor Larsen, a Norwegian nuclear physicist who had discovered the mysterious Delta Beams. -Capitaine Renault was renamed Monsieur Laporte and became an agent of Interpol. -In total, this version was cut by about 25 minutes compared to the original.
Luckily, an uncut and newly dubbed version that was faithful to the original came out in 1975 which is the one that most Germans know today.
