I was about 7-8 when Episode 1 came out and even at that age, I found Jar Jar to be lame. George Lucas has often said that character was meant for kids who were my age at the time, but I also can't remember a single kid finding him funny.
I am genuinely curious if anyone who was a kid during Episode 1 found him to be funny

I was 8-9 when episode 1 came out and even then I thought he was very annoying.

My son thinks he's hilarious, though my son is only six.

Only person I know that found him funny was my mother. And she was mid 50s back then.

Not really, I thought his scenes dragged and often didn’t fit tonally with the rest of the plot.
But that was more the fault of bad writing than the actor’s performance, which was good for what it was.

I was nine years old when TPM came out and thought he was hilarious. I was very easy to amuse back then. Now? He sucks.

He really had nothing to do with how bad the character was

If I recall, for a time you could buy lollipops where his tongue was the pop and his head was the handle.
My friends and I had plenty of juvenile chuckles at that.

I don't know about funny, but I wasn't annoyed by the character like most people were.

The problem with Jar Jar, besides the language thing (I don't loathe him like most but I do dislike the Gungan way of talking, even with Boss Nass who is played by BRIAN BLESSED who is always fun) is wasted potential.
Jar Jar, being different from everyone else in looks, living conditions and such, should have been the outside observer, giving viewpoints on things from his perspective outside of the political dealings of the Naboo elite or the Jedi. Closest that we got to that was the scene where he and Padme were talking where he mentions the Gungan army.
That, plus him building up in the movie from clumsy, cowardly and accidentally dangerous to actually finding a way to help his people win against the droid army in the end would have had people not hate him as much as they did, I would think.
And again, lose the weird language trait. Is that even a thing in non-English dubs of the movie?

Funniest part of the language thing was the look of utter disgust on my friend's face when we started discussing the possibility of a Gungan becoming a Mandalorian Foundling. "Deesa Da Way!" "I want to hurt you right now."

It has been so long since I saw the movie and a recent James & Mike episode brought up this point:
-Was there a specific reason why he accompanied Qui Gon and Obi Wan past the Gungan city? I understand him showing them the way to the city but why did he accompany them afterwards? I seem to vaguely remember him having trouble with the Gungan chief but unless he was in danger of getting the death sentence I cannot see any reason why the two Jedis should drag him along for the ride.

Qui Gon saved his ass twice. Jar Jar owed him a Life Debt.

Before the film was released I read a description of him that stated he was ‘a computer animated comic sidekick’.
At that point alone I knew I’d despise him, but nothing prepared me for just how much.
