Okay, this is, in the grand scheme of things, pretty minor, and I have no doubt that there is zero malice behind it, given JR has unambiguously condemned some such as Ludvig Borga for their bigotry, but uh...
So, John Silver hits a brainbuster on Matt Hardy. JR compares it to an early user of the move, predating even Dick Murdoch, already a dubious figure in 2020, and his usage of the brainbuster. Unfortunately, the man he chooses to compare it to was Dick's idol.
I'll just spit it out. Do we really need to make reference to Killer Karl Kox, whose initials were absolutely deliberate, in the year 2020? Even if he was putting over Silver's execution of the move as basically perfect, on par with Kox's or better, it was still a "pause the TV, did he just say that name?!" moment.

I'm gonna be honest, I did not even catch that, and as you said, there was probably no malice behind it, just some history lesson about the innovator of a move To lift a little tension though, it did give me this idea.

Like, odds are, it was just because Killer Karl Kox would have been someone he saw plenty of when he was getting his start in wrestling. It's just... unfortunate.

I think the only silver lining is that so few of AEW's audience likely even knows who that is.

Meh, it barely registered with me and most of my watching party doesn't even know who the guy is. My watching party would have been more offended if he mentioned Chris Benoit, to be honest.

I think about 12 people in the world got the reference and pieced that together.

Yeah, he's going to be saved by the sheer obscurity of the reference.
But just goes to show why his being so stuck in the 80's is, ah, not the best thing.

I caught it..... didn't bother me. I truly believe there were a LOT of guys that back in the day lead lifestyles that wouldn't be approved of today. He wasn't brought up to praise what a great man he was. It was to get over a wrestling move.

Was Kox's gimmick race-baiting at all? Was he affiliated with the Klan?
If not, just an unfortunate coincidence. Like saying, "Silver's favorite band is 311"
And as someone said, not everyone knows about how we got from Silver to him.

I missed this, but JR was able to fill his Embarrassing Thing To Say Please Get Him TF Off The Table Dot Dot Dot SHUT UP moment (brought to you by Deadlock) by him saying Men's Championship and then trying to correct it and saying "Why do they call it the WOMEN'S Championship anyways?!"
Dot Dot Dot SHUT UP!!!

Dot Dot Dot SHUT UP!!! One of the most underrated Excalibur skills is the "sort of reference what weird think JR just said, and then tie into a Segway to move it to another topic."

I'm willing to believe there wasn't any malice behind it.
But I also am aware that even the slightest thing that could be interpreted as insensitive could hurt AEW with the fanbase that it has courted.

That's like saying you can't refer to Randy Savage, whose character is universally beloved but who was problematic as hell in real life in his relationships with Elizabeth and the WCW version of Gorgeous George. Roddy Piper had his moments of foul stuff in character like using racial slurs and painting himself half-Black. Steve Austin hit an ex-wife and was accused of being abusive to a girlfriend before getting his crap together.
I'm not justifying anything these folks have done, just pointing out that if you refuse to mention anyone who ever did horrible things by today's standards (either in character or in real life), you'd hardly be able to even give a passing mention about most wrestlers from the 20th century.

Unfortunate at best. JR has said some pretty crappy things before but not even for a second do I believe this was supposed to be some sort of tongue-in-cheek silly moment where he wanted to see if he could sneak in a Klan reference.

Dang, that’s a deep cut. Damn, JR old, lmao. Yeah, like this would have been a deep cut even 20 years ago, he retired in 1982, and was already ancient by the time JR was coming up, even. Surprisingly, only died like 10 years ago, like 15 years after Dick Murdoch, his wannabe.
