Who knew that the Mr. Mosquito series would spark the minds of someone working with a Simpsons licence?

The best theory I can come up with was that the studio were already developing a cel-shaded game about bugs in a suburban home, then halfway into development they got the Simpsons license, but since they were already working on a game, instead of pulling resources from it to develop a Simpsons game they decided to turn their original designs for the house and human characters into the Simpsons. The player character in the screenshots looks pleasingly cartoony, but not like they fit in with the Simpsons aesthetic at all. What I wanna know is what stopped them from releasing it. Did Fox pull the license when they saw what they were doing? Did they lose faith in the project? This is fascinating stuff.

Gameplay.
More than likely this is a tech demo.

You know what would make this a really strange Simpson's video game? If it was good.

You know what would make this a really strange Simpson's video game? If it was good. I resent that. Hit & Run is an underrated classic.

You know what would make this a really strange Simpson's video game? If it was good. Hit & Run and the arcade game were great, Road Rage was pretty good and the 2007 game was quite decent. Not a great track record in 30 years, but there were some good Simpsons games.

I have a theory that Bug Squad was a separate game that was being made(but got scrapped) and the developer was using The Simpsons to show off the cel shading engine to create interest for a potential Simpsons game?

From one of Red Lemon Studio's founders, Andy Campbell:
"Oh my! Not seen that for 20 years! We had a great coder who had developed an amazing cell shading engine for DC. I knew Fox pretty well, so this was a demo we created and I pitched to them. We were never commissioned, so this was technically never an official title in development
This was a trip down memory lane. The tech was great, developed by a guy named Rich Evans, great coder. Bug Squad concept came from Jamie Grant if I remember. A great art team built the models. The tech was also pitched as a production tool for the show itself. No game made though"

I’ve played Bart vs The Space Mutants in my adult life, and it’s baffles me how I could constantly get to the museum level, and sometimes the final as a young child. It’s nearly impossible to get to the mall now! The controls are ridiculous! Lol
