I don't care bout tasteless let's roll back to 2004 the man was a star regardless of how his run turned out. I respect the Nick Dinsmore because he was overlooked because they thought he lacked charisma when in actual fact he had plenty as he pulled of this character. They didn't rate him in that department so he turned up the volume and became very expressive and animimated. The man had the crowd behind him until the end of the Triple H feud. Injury and bad booking tainted him further but the first few months were legendary. You got Regal turning face something which would of seemed so forced to do otherwise and poor old Eugene going against his best wrestler Triple H at Summerslam. A flukey win over Hunter could of made this man! His jobber run later wasn't bad but they clearly had no plans for him other than "haha look at the spaz"

I was a huge Eugene fan. I even had the Eugene name tag shirt and proudly wore it in public. I still think the character had a lot more potential but WWE was only going to push his gimmick to a certain point. Watching the heels rage after Eugene out wrestled them during an exchange was always entertaining.

Did that heel turn where he wanted a kiss from some woman and she rejected it and he kept yelling I’m special go anywhere?

No he was a babyface a few weeks after that and the attack on Jim Duggan like nothing happened.

Eugene was my grandmothers favorite. She was always rooting for him.

The gimmick always had a low ceiling for the guy. It made a lot of fans uncomfortable from the word go and that number was only going to get bigger over time.

The thing is though, Dinsmore really got the character over. We "genuinely" cared for Eugene, and not just "hahaha let's laugh at the mentally challenged man child." That Rock one off segment really gave Coach comeuppance that we wanted to see him get for messing and bullying Eugene.

Initially I was leery of Eugene because in my opinion it bordered on tasteless at beast and outright offensive at worst, but he grew on me and I began to enjoy it. A big part of that was William Regal and he played his role in it great and was amazing after Eugene was attacked and he wanted revenge. The thing that really won me over completely was only a couple of months ago. After watching Brian Zane's video about Eugene and reading the comments really made me a huge fan. To read comments from parents and family members saying how much Eugene meant to children and people with special needs really showed that the gimmick, while not everyone's cp of tea, really did mean a lot to people is a good way.

Exactly.
He could of been Beaver Cleavage from the get go, but his performance got fans behind him they wanted to see his story play out and were entertained watching his interactions with superstars. Once he became a mainstay he got stale and they had him act more like a big baby than anything. Still, he was the type of guy that could hang around doing various odd couple tag teams for a few years.

Say what you want about the gimmick, but it provided fodder for the best promo William Regal ever gave, hands down.

They needed to keep up the whole "he's actually a brilliant technical wrestler" thing they had in the beginning, instead of just having him copy the finishers of other wrestlers.

Loved the training stuff with Regal when it becomes obvious Eugene has real talent leaving Regal stunned/impressed. Then they got lazy and took it from him being slow but brilliant between the ropes to him being a modern day Bushwhacker who stole finishers.

I fantasy booked turning him into a genius heel after Benoit hit him with a piledriver.... This idea wasnt great at the time as has aged even worst.

Say what you want about the gimmick, but it provided fodder for the best promo William Regal ever gave, hands down. I LOVE this promo. When he says something like "It was very cruel of a cunning man like you to take advantage of a disadvantaged boy." It's absolutely awesome. Felt like some legit, too good for wrestling acting. Loved it.
